May 13,
We have only three weeks of study left (actually, exams start three weeks from this Friday).
As some students fell behind taking extra time on the Pythagorean Theorem Test, tonight's homework will be to complete all work on p.690, 2 - 20 even (skip 10 and 16) and p.694 - 695, complete the Charts.

Ask to see your child's progress report!

May 6
With TAKS behind us we move forward toward the end of year exams in this last six weeks.  All classes will cover the Pythagorean Theorem, estimating square roots, and finding the surface area of prisms and cylinders.

Because of scheduling differences, with some classes not meeting last Friday, some received a Frayer Model (definition) homework assignment and some did not.  All classes will test on the Pythagorean Theorem this Friday and there will be no homework this week.

April 17,

BTW. Homework added Wednesday for Pre-AP, due Friday.  Chapter 10 review pp.541 - 543, #8 -42 even.

All classes, book check Thursday.

April 14,

Pre-AP fineshes Probability package from Measuring up tomorrow just as Math 7 starts it.  After taking the end of Chapter test in the glencoe textbook to assess understanding after this abbreviated lesson, we'll begin review for TAKS test which is two weeks from today.

Math 7 received the remainder of the 2006 released TAKS test today to be completed as homework by Friday.  We're testing Measures of Central Tendency today and will due probability package together Wed and Thur.  If all goes well, we'll begin review Friday.

The marking period ends tomorrow.  Today's test will go on the next six weeks.  All of our focus is turning to TAKS, after which we'll begin a more course oriented review for the end of year District ACP exam.

April 10,

All classes are busy trying to finish basic curriculum in preparation for TAKS.  Pre-AP has a Probability package copied (by license) from Measuring Up.  It's the most condensed, TAKS related probability summary I've seen.  Pre-AP students were told to complete it for Homework to have ready to review Friday, April 11.

Math 7 students are just a few days behind.  We completed the final section of Measures of Central Tendency today with instructions to finish it for homework if necessary.  We'll test on it Monday and move on to Probability.  Time is of the essence if we're to have review time before the April 29 TAKS test.

For all students: a current report of grades and missing work has been provided and work will be accepted up until Friday, April 11.  The grading period ends next Wednesday.

No formal homework is pending as I give students the opportunity to make up missing work and retake failed tests for the six weeks.  Students have been informed that pressure will not end with TAKS.  We'll switch concentration to the Glencoe book curriculum to be sure that they perform to the best of their ability on the end of semester exams.

Parents, I see that my last post from the week of March 31 isn't showing.  I'll be more careful in reviewing my posts to see that they are saved.

March 18,

No Saturday school due to Good Friday holiday.  We encourage you to bring them the following Saturday.  Math 7 just tested on polygons and angles and is starting area and volume of two and three dimensional objects.

Math Pre-AP is just finishing this lesson and will be tested next Monday.  Their homework, due Thursday, is the end of Chapter 12 review.  All students should be working and studying.  Math 7 homework will be assigned Thursday and due Monday.

March 3,

Saturday school attendance February 23 was lower than I expected.  Many of the parents whom I contacted for the cancelled Saturday school failed to bring their children to this one.

The six weeks ended last Friday and your child will receive a report card the Monday after break,  The next evening we'll have parent teacher conferences.  Please plan to attend.

Homework for both Math 7 and Pre-AP will be assigned this Thursday.  It will be lengthy and due Monday.  More and more students are slacking of at turning in work and this will be reflected in the report catds.  Students should be gearing up, not slowing down, as TAKS approaches.  These are the scores high schools will see when they apply.

February 19,

Saturday school will definitely take place this Saturday, Feb. 23.  Even if I haven't called to say that your child is in danger of failing, you should ask your child if they think they could improve their grades in any core subject by attending.

Math 7 tests today on percentages.  A disppointing few turned in their weekend review homework. They will have another homework assignment Thursday as we start a unit on angles and polygons.

Pre-AP has homework tonight on the circumference and area of circles.  Ask what their grade was on last weeks test on angles and polygons.

As always you can reach me at 214-236-5603 with any questions.

February 5,

Both Pre-AP and Math 7 will have homework packages to complete tonight.  Those in class periods 1 - 3 will get them tomorrow due to testing this morning.  Saturday school is being held this Saturday and next for February.  Students should arrive by 8:30 and will be released at noon.  In past years Saturday school has been very successful in helping struggling students.  I'm in the process of calling parents of students I'd like to see attend, but feel free to maake your own decision if you're not happy with your child's grsdes.

Math 7 will have a unit test by end of week on solving equations and perimeter and area of rectangles (Chapt 4).  Math 7 Pre-AP will have a test Monday or Tuesday on Chapt 11, angles, polygons, and graphing.

January 23,

Our end of semester exams are behind us and you'll soon be receiving your child's report card.  This should reflect the 3rd six weeks grade, the ACP (Assessment of Course Performance) grade and the semester average.  Feel free to call me at 214-236-5603 if you have any questions.

You'll also be receiving, via your child, a syllabus for the next six weeks.  Math 7 will be working on equation solving in Chapter 4 of the Glencoe book and Math 7 Pre-AP will be working on angles and polygons (Chapter 11).  Both classes will have homework Jan. 24.

We'll also begin dedicating Wednesdays to TAKS preparation (no, not he IRS forms you're starting to think about!)  If I feel that your child needs additional help I'll contact you regarding before or after school tutoring.  As usual, I'm available to stay any afternoon we don't have a meeting or parent conference.

I look forward to contributing to your child's success during the second half of the year.

December 11,

Tomorrow is review day.  We've been using Wednesday reviews to prepare for ACPs (end of course exams).  Both Math 7 and Pre-AP will have tests on Thursday on Ratios and Proportions and Solving Equations, respectively.  Your students should be studying Wednesday evening.

We are attempting to get through all new material in both classes before the vacation so that we can have a full week of review.  There will be homework over the weekend because with testing, we'll be starting new units Friday.  Math 7 will finish with a Chapter on finding percentages of numbers and Pre-AP still has to do proportions and then the percentages chapter.  They will be moving very quickly.

November 29,

I've been out of school two days on personal business.  he substitute had them retake the Benchmark from October after we reviewed some weak areas Wednesday.  I'll run the scantrons Friday to see what progress we've made.  The kids have also been reviewing for a fraction test on Chapter 6 on Monday.  They should be studying this weekend.  Report cards are issued Tuesday.  Grades are generally down with a large number of data collection projects (see below) not even turned in.  This year's seventh grade seems content to ride on last years knowledge which is not acceptable.  I've begun phone calls to schedule parent conferences.
If you don't receive a call and your child's grades are ok, this does not apply to you.

November 1,

Your child has a test on decimals Friday.  We're also launching a test-grade data collection project that will require interviewing 100 people (easy in a school of 400) and presenting their opinions or prefernces on a variety of subjects.  The students may pick any appropriate topic that has at least four potential answers.  They will predict the responses before interviewing.  The actual results will be presented in decimal, percent, and fraction form (this is what we're studying now).  The data is due Friday, 11/9, and the final presentation package on Friday, 11/16.  No late packages will be accepted.  In past years the kids have enjoyed doing this and we've gotten some very original and attractive packages.

Sorry progress reports are late.  I'll have them out Monday, and give students until that Friday to turn in any new missing work.  They were given a list of missing work two weeks ago and had until last Friday to turn it in.

October 15,

Your child received his/her report card today.  Ask to see it.

Parent/Teacher conference night is tomorrow (TUesday) 4:00 - 8:00 PM.  Please attend!

7th grade math has a Chapter 2 test thursday and will have a review homework worksheet Wednesday.

I look forwird to seeing you tomorrow.

October 5,

Homework tonight.  Chapter 2.4 Worksheet.  Your child saw his/her average and test score Monday.  Ask them.  A few have late work missing and you should have heard from me by phone.  Friday is the last day of the grading period.  Please come to PTA at 6:00 next Tuesday, Oct.11.

September 19,

Your child has his/her first test back as of Tuesday afternoon.  Ask to see it.

Homework tonight from textbook: pp. 71 - 73,#1 - 39, odd.

September 15

First major Test this Monday, Sept. 17.  It will cover exponents, square roots, order of operations, and variable expressions.  Ask to see your child's grade by Wednesday.

Sept. 3

Ask your student to show you their individualized results from the pre-assessment test they took last week.  This was not for a grade but to identify the skill level they had retained over the summer.  Results will be given them Tuesday and they show their percentage correct in each of the 6 main objectives so they and we can be prepared to support them.  They should also have asked you to review and sign the six week syllabus so that you'll know what we are working on.

I'll call you with any performance or behavioral problems.  You may reach me on my cell at 214-236-5603.  Calls during school will be returned during my planning period, lunch, or after school.

Also please plan on being at our first PTA meeting Tuesday, September 11 at 6:00..  It's generally a gala event and we elect a new board for the new school year.  The band usually performs as does the choir, both of which are great, and the principals, Dr. Pipkin and Mr. Calicchio, always say a few words.  Bring a check for $5 or $10 and become a member.

Aug. 20, 2007

I look forward to seeing you all in a week.  Come back smart!  We'll be spending several days on a pre-assessment test that is designed to show how much you've retained from 6th grade.
