Welcome to eighth grade Language Arts. All year the eighth graders will have a standard routine to follow
concerning grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and SAT Words practice. Each class period the students write and correct one sentence using correct punctuation and capitalization. Another sentence is labeled with the correct parts of speech and is diagrammed. SAT vocabulary words are issued weekly, with additional practices following throughout the week. We will also focus on developing vocabulary by learning various prefixes, root words, and suffixes, which we will refer to as morphemes.
Students will be given quizzes over the skills practiced the preceeding weeks which will include capitalization, punctuation, diagramming, SAT tests, morphemes, etc.
ALL STUDENTS
The Watson's Go to Birmingham-1963
We will begin a unit of the Civil Rights Movement. The novel we will be reading in class is The Watson's Go to Birmingham-1963. All reading will be done orally in class, as well as discussions, watching documentary films, and writing assignments. We will focus on the four basic literary elements: character, plot, setting, theme, as well as main idea and summarizations. If you are absent, you will need to collect your make up work when you return.
ALL STUDENTS:
SAT WORDS/Vocabulary Words
While reading the novel, we will substitute vocabulary relevant to the story rather than our standard SAT list of words.
Remember to study your Vocabulary/SAT words every evening. You will be given ten words and will have approximately two weeks to learn the words before you have a test over those ten words. A practical way to learn the meanings of the words would be to write a sentence using the word. Think of a hobby or an extra-curricular activity in which you are interested;use the new word in a sentence relating to your interest. Draw a picture demonstrating the word meaning.
ADVANCED CLASS
WORD WIZ TEST: MONDAY, November 3
Your assignments will include the information above, with some additional curriculum. One item that will be an "every week assignment" will be something referred to as Word Wiz. You will be given a list of prefixes, root meanings, and suffixes. You will need to spend time outside of class learning this information. Every three lessons will include a new list and practices. After three lessons, a test will be given. YOU MUST STUDY OUTSIDE OF CLASS TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITH THIS SKILL!! This information will be useful to you not only this year, but for many years to come.
