Welcome to 8th grade speech!

4th and 14th periods will be presenting play productions on December 18, at 8:30 AM and again at 9:40 AM in the junior high cafeteria.  Parents are welcome to attend.

5th and 6th periods have been working on radio plays for taping in class.  They will continue with improvisations and speaking activities to finish out the semester.

Overview of class:

The goal in this class is to become a more effective communicator.  Students will begin the semester by participating in activities to improve listening skills.  We will also be studying nonverbal communication with a focus on body language.  This unit includes a solo pantomime performance by each student.  Next, we will cover voice production and practice vocal exercises to improve quality of voice.  A unit on improvisation follows with a focus on imagination and creative thinking. Throughout the semester we will be working on public speaking skills, and each student will present various types of speeches to the class.  Finally, each class will have the opportunity to audition for and work in some capacity in a one-act play which will be presented to the junior high student body.  This activity is usually the students' favorite part of the curriculum.

Parents, please contact me at Ext. 2542, if you have any questions or concerns.  I have enjoyed working with your child this semester.

Mary Nell Smith
