Welcome to 8th grade Language Arts! I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with your child this year. My notes below list the topics to be covered each week and any tests that will be given that week. Other information, such as progress reports, will be there also. My conference period is from 2:00-3:10. Please call or email any day that you would like. The contact information is at the bottom of the parent letter that I sent home with your child.
WEEK OF AUGUST 25-29:
Topics for this week are as follows: learning rules/procedures, DOL introduction, SAT introduction, grammar introduction, beginning the study of morphemes, and reading a short story. There will be no tests this week for regular students. Advanced students will have the objective test over their summer reading on Thursday and write the essay on Friday.
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 1-5:
Topics for this week will be as follows: DOL, SAT(finish 1-10), morphemes(adding 4 more, for a total of 8), and completing work on the short story for last week. There will be a quiz on the story on Thursday and a both a morpheme and a plot note quiz on Friday.
Advanced classes: These students will be introduced to the Word Wiz vocabulary program (morpheme based) and begin studying lessons 1-3. Other than that, there topics will be the same as the regular classes above. They will have a quiz on the short story on Thursday and a plot note quiz Friday.
NOTE: ALL students should be taking home their SAT folder home each night to study. The first SAT test in Tuesday, Sept.9. All students should be studying their morphemes at home also.
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 8-12:
Regular classes: Topics for the week are the following: DOL, SAT(test on 1-10 and begin new list), morphemes(adding 4 more, for a total of 12), reviewing literary elements with a focus on characterization, and reading a short story("A Retrieved Reformation"). There will be an SAT test on Tuesday(major grade) and a common assessment test on Friday over morphemes(all 12) and literary elements with a focus on plot.
Advanced classes: The topics will be the same, and the tests will be the same. These students will continue to work on Word Wiz(test next week).
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 15-19:
Topics for regular classes: DOL, SAT 15-19, new morphemes, literary elements(focus on character, setting, and theme),and writing(character analysis paragraph). Tests will be on these days: Wednesday--story quiz, Thursday--character notes quiz, and Friday-morphemes.
Topics for the advanced classes: They will do the same as above, with the exception of morphemes. They will be working on Word Wiz lessons 1-2 and have a test on them Friday(major grade). They will have a story quiz Wed. and character notes quiz Thurs.
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 22-26:
Regular classes: Topics for this week are as follows: DOL, review of SAT words 11-20(test on Sept. 30), literary elements(focus on setting and theme),grammar(prepositional phrases), and reading of the story "The Tell-Tale Heart." There will be quizzes on these days: Wed.-quiz on setting notes, Thurs.--quiz on story, and Fri.--quiz on theme notes.
Advanced classes: The topics will be the same, with the addition of Word Wiz lessons 4-6. The quizzes will be the same as above, and the Word Wiz test(lessons 1-6) will be Sept. 29.
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 29-OCTOBER 3:
Regular classes will work on these topics: DOL, reivew and testing of SAT words 11-20, morphemes(5 new ones), grammar(appositives, dependent clauses, prep. phrases, and compound sentence), vocabulary words, and begin the reading of a novel in class(The Watsons Go to Birmingham--1963). There will be a quiz Monday on all the morphemes studied so far(20) and an SAT test on Tuesday. Projects done in class last Friday will be presented in class Monday(major grade).
Advanced classes will have the same topics, with the exception of morphemes. They will instead work on lessons 7-9 of Word Wiz. Tests for these students will be as follows: Monday--Word Wiz 1-6 and Tuesday--SAT 11-20).
WEEK OF OCTOBER 6-10:
Topics include DOL(focus on introductory dependent clauses), reading Ch. 2-3 of novel, character study, identifying literary devices(allusion, hyperbole, similes),and morphemes. There will be a morpheme quiz on Thursday.
Advanced classes will have the same topics, but their morpheme study will be Word Wiz lessons 10-12. The Word Wiz test on lessons 1-6 will be Monday. The test for lessons 1-12 will be Oct. 13.
NOTE: Friday is the Common Assessment test, which covers what we have focused on for the last three weeks(literary elements).
WEEK OF OCTOBER 13-17:
Topics for the week are as follows: DOL(focus on compound and complex sentences), reader response, reading of Ch. 4-6 of novel, focus on main idea, literary devices, and summarizing, and character study . There are no quizzes/tests planned for this week.
Advanced students will have the same topics, but their morpheme study will be lessons 13-15 of Word Wiz. On Monday they will have Word Wiz test 1-12.
