ART 1-8 grades
Art Corner, early May, 2008...three more weeks of school and lots of work to be done...
FIRST graders just finished painting their clay medallians and are about to learn how to paint an evening sky, many colors and lots of textured paint. Finally, as we do every year about this time we make portfolios. Each child will fold a large, heavy weight paper with several folds, names added, they will create their own carrying case for all collected work from this year!
SECOND graders finished making Fantastic Fishes, finally, lots of time on that one. Now they are challenged to create movable, cut-out animal pieces into 'pictures in motion.' As they finished cutting out legs, tails, heads of animals, they will make rubbings of these paper parts , one after another, trying their best to make them move across the page. It is not as easy as it sounds. Finally, they, too will create their own paper portfolios for all their artwork.
THIRD graders made circle, paper plate weavings. They began by marking each plate with 15, evenly distributed outter marks, slit them, then added cord, round and round until they came full circle. Tieing off the ends, they began in the middle and added different colored yarns, weaving their circular wefts through the 'spokes of the warp' cords (first thing added to house the weft--colored yarns). Each time a new color was added, they knotted the new to the old and kept on going, round and round until they came to the outside rim. Cutting off the back cord and knotting the warp threads, three at a time, they ended up with a circular, palm-sized weaving. They will begin to make a mono-printed house image next. Then conclude with making portfolios of their artwork.
FOURTH grade are currently finishing card weavings, using lots of color, different textural combinations, and experiencing the patience it takes to make such a weaving. They will then begin a WORD Collage using The Be-Attitudes, (in conjunction with a project they are doing in their religion studies). They may use anything from magazine type-set, to drawing of letters, fabric-enhanced letters, almost anything goes in this collage. Finally, they will begin their annual paper portfolios to carry all their artwork.
FIFTH grade completed POP Art printing, one or two missed it, but will finish this week, they all did a fine job at the printing process. It is very much a hands-on, learn as you go kind of project, but very much fun. Next they will try their hand at the Art of Calligraphy. They will learn the basics and practice their skills with quill pens and special inks. It is an art form all its own and requires concentration and patience in learning to do it right. Last project is paper portfolios, which will be done to house all their collected works thus far.
SIXTH grade is currently studing Native American Crafts of the Southwest and their first project was a large card weaving. Patience and attention to detail was most important for success in this project. The next part of their assignment is the study of the Hopi Kachina Doll, the significance of it, what all the symbolism is about, as well as how to contruct the dolls out of paper cardboard/tissue roll holders and fabric. Paint and feathers and other ornaments will be added in the end. Finally, they will do a sand painting, time permitting. Portfolios, of course, are also the final project they will do, to house a lot of artwork.
SEVENTH-EIGHTH graders built ECO Houses and wrote a paper stating their intentions, house specifications, interior thoughts (even though that was not part of the actual sculpture). One round of presentations were given, and several more still need to be made. LTheir last project is a Geometric Circle Design, applied onto Silk Hoops, then painted. Using a professional compass, they will design a 10 3/4 inch circle pattern, trace over the design in bold marker, then redraw their chosen pattern, in liquid resist directly onto the hoop, let it dry, then apply colored inks with fine-tipped brushes. Portfolios will be their final job for this semester.
Thank you for sharing my art corner.
God Bless you all
and happy artmaking!
