Spanish classes: 7th and 8th grades are working from the Ven Conmigo textbook which is a High School Spanish 1 book. 7th grade is working from the beginning and 8th grade is starting with chapter 6. We have been reviewing basics such as the correct sounds and spelling for the numbers, color and shapes and correct pronunciation of the Spanish alphabet. We will be building an extensive vocabulary bank of nouns, pronouns, verbs (in the present tense), adjectives and adverbs. We are learning how to use common expressions in daily conversation. We have reviewed the geographic information about the various Spanish-speaking countries.
In music: We are practicing in-tune singing with new songs for the Mass. We are playing music games to help us with our singing, keeping the beat and enjoyment. In Pre-K through 3rd grade we integrate Spanish and Music instructions singing songs in Spanish that have motions and playing a Spanish version of "Fruitbasket Turnover", a game enjoyed by everyone.
About Recorder Karate:
Recorder Karate is a musical system that we will be using in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade general music classes at ICCS starting the week of September 24th, 2007. Your student can probably explain the system to you but I will go over it for you.
Recorders were the predecessors of flutes. They are a fun and easy woodwind instrument which we will use in order to learn musical notation reading and performance. We will be using a great storybook called “Mr. Everybody’s Musical Apartment” by Myles Feltenberger, which comes with songs, teaching materials, tests and accompaniment CDs. As each student learns how to read and play one or two notes, they will be tested individually to see if they have mastered the songs and notes for that lesson. For each successfully completed test they earn a “belt”, a ribbon to tie on to their recorder. There are various belts to indicate the level of accomplishment just like in Karate: white, yellow, green, red, blue, brown and black. When a student becomes a black belt, they become a teacher’s helper in recorder instruction. We hope to include recorders with Mass songs and with other performance opportunities.
If your child does not already have a good recorder, Pender’s Music Store, on South Elm Street has more than enough. They have the Gill recorder for $4.50 and the Yamaha for $8. I prefer the Yamaha, but the Gill certainly is fine for instruction. Your child will need to have their own recorder for sanitary reasons and so that they can practice at home and work their way through the belts. A “Black-Belt” Initiation Concert will be a goal for all of us. I have many advanced recorder instruction books, including duets, trios and quartets for the more advanced students as well.
