Well, we only have a few weeks left until summer and our children are looking forward to a good summer break. We may already have great plans for the summer.
Whether it is to stay home and relax or go on a great trip, far or near.
But our children are just like us, if we do not practice, practice, practice on certain skills we may lose them or lose some of those skills. Our children do tend to lose some of the important skills they have learned at school over summer break. To help them stay on track here are a few things we can try:
**Maintain a relaxed, but established routine
**Making reading, writting and math a part of each day
**Using the great outdoors or kitchens as a science lab
** Taking mini trips to the museum, library, zoo and other places of learning
**Setting aside computer time
**Involving them in family conversation (which helps with listening skills, possible decision making skills, problem-solving skills and ownership of certain responsibilities).
**Provide problem-solving opportunities
** Arranging for them to participate in group acitvities
**Giving them new responsibilities
**Limiting TV time
And the biggest skill saver is ... Encouraging our children to continue reading during the summer. With a little creativity you can have a "Bookswap Party" with their friends from school. Or have your children write short stories or poems. Maybe get a book or two (longer novels) to read throughout the summer that the whole family would enjoy and read a little of that book each day to your children. Maybe have them read a page if they are able.
If you are close to a city library, check out the summer reading programs they may offer. Maybe this is a good time to help your child read about a new hobby he or she is interest in.
We also need to be a good role model for our children. Let them see you reading book, magizines or the newspaper. And maybe TURN OFF THE T.V. for a time of quiet and reading.
Whatever you may do, please encourage your children to do something to keep their skills sharp or to possibly improve their skills for next year.
