I will continue posting several tips on how to enjoy living with your teenage student here on my site over the next several weeks that will hopefully be relevant to both the Middle School and the High School student.
If your child is in the midst of a longtime friendship that is falling apart, the best thing you can do is stand by and be a good listener. It is devastating for us to see our children hurting, but taking sides or intervening is not appropriate, nor will it help. Preadolescences do survive these hurts, especially if they know we are there to listen to their pain. They do need so sometimes however be reminded that friends are people who accept us as we are. They listen, they don't needlessly criticize, they back us up when we're right and pick us up when we're down.
Here are some ways you can improve your child's school attendance:
> Talk with your child about the importance of attending school regularly.
> Avoid scheduling family trips or doctor appointments during school hours.
> Make sure your child stays healthy by eating nutritious food and getting enough sleep and exercise.
> Don't accept excuses for why your child "must" miss or be late for school.
> Discuss with your child what happened at school each day.
> Support school rules and consequences for skipping class and being tardy.
> Show your child why education is important. Give specific examples of how education helps people succeed.
> Lead by example. If children see parents taking off work for no real reason, they may expect to be able to do the same thing.
!!!!!!!!!RESEARCH SHOWS THAT ATTENDANCE IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN SCHOOL SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would also like this opportunity to remind your student about our flex calendar again for this upcoming school year. Remember, if you pass all your core classes every six weeks, pass all of your TAKS tests, and meet attendance requirements, you will be exempt from coming to the last nine (flex days) of school. If you fail to meet even one of these three criteria, you will be required to attend school on May 26th through June 5th. Students are not allowed to miss more than 8 days each semester, and must have a Doctor, Dentist, or parent note for any and all absences. This (flex days) is something that is pretty unique to our school, but something that a lot of schools are looking into for the future. In fact, we had a school conduct a site visit of our campus during flex days this year and they were very impressed with the learning that was taking place.
We also ask parents to remind your students to be on their best behavior at school, so their education is not interrupted by disciplinary measures. We also ask that parents familiarize themselves with the student dress code, the Code of Conduct and the Student Handbook.
Here's hoping that in some small way what we do at Rosebud-Lott High School will inspire you to reach new heights in all that you do. We really do care about the children that we serve.
If there is ever any way that we can help you to increase your child's learning, please feel free to contact any of your student's teachers, the counselor, or the principal and we will be happy to listen to your concerns and work with you on implementing improvements.
