Welcome to my website,

Congratulations to Mr. David Veteto who has been selected to receive a Golden Apple Award from the Temple Daily Telegram. He was nominated by band student Valerie Bravo.

Don't you all love this warm weather! I know I do. Can you believe we less than FOUR weeks of school left until graduation?! It won't be long now until summer will be here. Take out the week we have final exams, and the week we have six weeks testing going on, and the three days that we have TAKS Testing, and that doesn't leave much time for the rest of the school year. Of course, those that haven't taken care of business may have to attend the extra nine flex days. Those are for anyone that fails TAKS, fails a core course (math, English, science, or social studies) any six weeks, or has missed more days than they can make up through Saturday school and still be within the attendance guidelines. Nevertheless, there isn't much time left. Seniors, I hope you enjoy these final few weeks. Underclassmen, keep working hard towards your goals. While there aren't many days left, we still have a thousand and one things to do. It will be a busy final two months! Stay on top of assignments and get them turned in.

I would also like for you to encourage your student to nominate their teacher for the following awards:

KWTX Golden Apple Award at http://www.kwtx.com/goldenapple/headlines/396031.html

KXXV's Educator's Choice Award at http://kxxv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5738922

I will continue posting several tips on how to enjoy living with your teenage student here on my site over the next several weeks that will hopefully be relevant to both the Middle School and the High School student.

If your child is in the midst of a longtime friendship that is falling apart, the best thing you can do is stand by and be a good listener. It is devastating for us to see our children hurting, but taking sides or intervening is not appropriate, nor will it help. Preadolescences do survive these hurts, especially if they know we are there to listen to their pain. They do need so sometimes however be reminded that friends are people who accept us as we are. They listen, they don't needlessly criticize, they back us up when we're right and pick us up when we're down.

=======================================================

Here are some ways you can improve your child's school attendance:
> Talk with your child about the importance of attending school regularly.
> Avoid scheduling family trips or doctor appointments during school hours.
> Make sure your child stays healthy by eating nutritious food and getting enough sleep and exercise.
> Don't accept excuses for why your child "must" miss or be late for school.
> Discuss with your child what happened at school each day.
> Support school rules and consequences for skipping class and being tardy.
> Show your child why education is important. Give specific examples of how education helps people succeed.
> Lead by example. If children see parents taking off work for no real reason, they may expect to be able to do the same thing.
!!!!!!!!!RESEARCH SHOWS THAT ATTENDANCE IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN SCHOOL SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember students with perfect attendance have a chance to win a $50 gift card!

=======================================================

I would also like this opportunity to remind your student about our flex calendar for this school year. Remember, if you pass all your core classes every six weeks, pass all of your TAKS tests, and meet attendance requirements, you will be exempt from coming to the last nine (flex days) of school. If you fail to meet even one of these three criteria, you will be required to attend school on May 27th through June 6th. Students are not allowed to miss more than 8 days each semester, and must have a Doctor, Dentist, or parent note for any and all absences. This (flex days) is something that is pretty unique to our school, but something that a lot of schools are looking into for the future. In fact, Mr. Wright and I made a presentation to other superintendents and high school principals in Region 12 at the service center recently (Wednesday, January 23). Students who have already qualified to be required to attend the Flex Days should have already received or should soon receive a letter in the mail stating they must attend. If they do not attend, they will not receive credit for those classes for the school year and will have to retake those classes next year.

We also ask parents to remind your students to be on their best behavior at school, so their education is not interrupted by disciplinary measures. We also ask that parents familiarize themselves with the student dress code, the Code of Conduct and the Student Handbook.

Here's hoping that in some small way what we do at Rosebud-Lott High School will inspire you to reach new heights in all that you do. We really do care about the children that we serve.

If there is ever any way that we can help you to increase your child's learning, please feel free to contact any of your student's teachers, the counselor, or the principal and we will be happy to listen to your concerns and work with you on implementing improvements.
