The school year is off to a good start! Next week, I will be sending home a guide with our plans for the school year. In the meantime, I would like to share with you what we have been doing in class.
This past week we worked on asking questions. We wrote basic questions and complex questions, and we discussed what makes a good question. We used these skills in both reading (El presidente de la clase) and science (See unit of inquiry below). According to Grant Wiggins, “Students cannot possibly learn everything of value by the time they leave school, but we can instill in them the desire to keep questioning throughout their lives.” Learning to ask good questions the foundation of learning through inquiry which is part of our PYP philosophy.
Our first unit of inquiry is:
Matter Matters!
Central Idea:
The properties of matter help us know and understand our environment in order to make decisions.
Inquiry Into:
• What matter is
• Physical properties of matter
• How the properties of matter help us make decisions
We discovered that there are more than three states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, plasma, and Bose-Einstein Condensate. We did a demonstration to find out if gases take up space. Taking up space is a property of matter. See our pictures!
We have been practicing the multiplication facts from 0-5. Our goal is to be able to write the answer to each fact in 2 seconds or less with 90% accuracy. We will not spend much time reviewing these facts in class, so it is important that the children review them at home on a daily basis. Our first quiz will be on Friday, September 7.

Estimados padres de familia:
¡El año escolar ha empezado muy bien! La próxima semana les enviaré una guía con nuestros planes para el año escolar. Mientras tanto, me gustaría compartir con ustedes lo que hemos estado haciendo en clase.
La semana pasada trabajamos en formular preguntas. Escribimos preguntas básicas y preguntas complejas y discutimos los criterios que se necesitan para hacer una buena pregunta. Usamos esta destreza tanto en lectura (Estamos leyendo Presidente de la clase) como en ciencias (Vea la unidad de investigación que se detalla abajo.). De acuerdo a Grant Wiggins, “No es posible que los estudiantes aprendan todo de valor para cuando terminen la escuela, pero podemos inculcar en ellos el deso de seguir preguntando a través de sus vidas.” El aprender a hacer buenas preguntas es la fundación de la investigación que es parte de nuestra filosofía del PYP.

Idea central:
Las propiedades de la materia nos ayudan a conocer y entender nuestro medio ambiente para poder tomar decisiones.
Una investigación de:

• Las propiedades físicas de la materia
• Como las propiedades de la materia nos ayudan a tomar decisiones
Aprendimos que existen más de tres estados de la materia: sólido, líquido, gas, plasma y condensado de Bose-Einstein. Hicimos una demostración para descubrir si los gases ocupan espacio. Ocupar espacio es una propiedad de la materia. ¡Vean nuestras fotos!
Hemos estado practicando las tablas de multiplicación del 0-5. Nuestra meta es poder escribir la respuesta de cada problema en 2 segundos o menos con una exactitud del 90%. No vamos a tomar mucho tiempo repasando estas tablas en clase, así que es importante que los niños practiquen las multiplicaciones en casa a diario. Nuestra primera prueba será el viernes, 7 de septiembre.
