Hello Parents!
I can’t believe the year has flown by!  .  Thanks to all the parents who supported our class during this year’s Field Day.  I know your emotional and liquid support led them to victory.

Please ask your kids about our Dash-Flash planner.  They have done a magnificent job of researching different sources of energy, and answering a difficult continuum of questions.   I’m really excited about what they have presented to our class, and how they’ve inspired me to become more informed about electricity/environmental issues.

For our last Unit of Inquiry, the students are working in small groups to research a hero [either from Texas, the U.S. or international] whose actions have impacted society.  I really feel that these final projects give them a taste for the research that will be expected of them as 5th graders and beyond.

Thank you all again for a wonderful year!  As these last 9 days wind down, I will keep you updated about our final hurrah!

Thanks again to all the parents for coming to last week’s Open House!  It was great meeting you.

Starting next week we will begin eating healthy snacks after the ancillary class.  The students are responsible for keeping the snacks in their desks for snack time.  We want to encourage the kids to eat healthy, so fruit and trail mixes are definitely encouraged.  Students are also encouraged to bring water to class.  So far, students who bring water have done a great job of handling their needs with responsibility.

Also, we will be taking our math and science common assessment this week.  The math test will consist of being able to read, write, and know the value of numbers into the hundred millions place, rounding the 10s place and the 100s place, comparing numbers and problem solving.  The science common assessment will consist of TAKS like questions over the properties of matter.

Dear Parents,

This has been an exciting first two weeks of school!  I want to thank you for the prompt attention to the first week handouts and questionnaire.  You have definitely facilitated my job.

In the classroom, we have begun our first planner,

                “Matter Matters!”
Central Idea:  The properties of matter help us know
and understand our environment in order to make decisions.

An Inquiry into:  What matter is
                  Physical properties of matter
How the properties of matter help us
                   make decisions

We are also working on understanding place value and conceptually understanding large numbers into the millions period.  We are working on constructing a 100,000 model and may soon be making cubes at home in order to create a second 100,000 model.  It’s a great visual to help understand the base-10 system!

You’ll also notice that we have begun our first novel, Tuck Everlasting.  Our Reading Response homework will now come from this novel.

I am excited to work with such bright children and caring parents.  Please feel free to contact me with questions or comments!
