Weekly Topics

Here's what we've got planned for May:

Reader’s Workshop-- Our literature circles have been a great success. We will begin a new non-fiction book this week and continue reading it into the following week. This will be the last book the kids read in literature circles. When we are finished with the last book, the kids will do a reflection on the literature circle process. This was a great introduction to literature circles, which will continue into third grade.

Writer’s Workshop— We will continue to read and reflect on poetry and soon begin to write our own poems. For writing this month, the students will also be taking notes on weather research. Later, they will gather their notes to create a presentation to the class, explaining the type of weather they researched.

Math-- We have started Unit 10 in math. Please read the family letter that was sent home on Tuesday for more details about this unit. Unit 10 deals with money--counting money, making change, etc. We will finish the year with some review activities and some challenge/extension activities.

Science/SS— We are finishing the year with Wacky Weather. The students will research different types of weather events in groups for about a week. Then, each group will create a presentation to the class teaching about their form of weather. It should be a lot of fun and we should learn a lot from each other.

Some Favorite Links:
  • Starfall Reading This is EXCELLENT for reading/phonics/spelling rules. It covers ABCs to nonfiction and poetry. Use this link!!
  • Teach R Kids (Math) I love this website. It has practice problems for all focus areas in the math curriculum--grades K-5. You can set the level for your child.
  • Dolch sight words on flashcards You may want to go to this site and print out the 2nd or 3rd grade Dolch words for your child to practice. They are already formatted on notecards so you don't have to do the work:) Make sure that your child can read all the dolch words for 2nd grade. If he/she can, start learning how to spell them. Many sight words have irregular spelling patterns. That's why we have to memorize them by sight.
  • A+ Math Great website--make your own math flashcards and lots more.
  • Working with Words Practice high frequency words, spelling patterns, other phonics practice.
  • Ask Jeeves for kids A search engine for your child's inquiries
