Week of May 5, 2008

What we’re learning…

IB/PYP

Planner:  The American Dream

Central idea: People create structure within a business system.

An inquiry into

  • structures and roles created within a busines
  •  roles in economic systems
  • necessary structures for success

Students have formed their businesses and have carefully designed a product.  Pricing and production will begin this week.  I will serve as an "investor" in their company and purchase some Raw Materials.  They will price their product carefully and plan to make a profit.  I have asked students to discuss at home why this planner is titled "The American Dream".  We will share our thoughts on this throughout the week.

Language Arts

Students have learned about Pourquoi stories through a series of inquiry-based workstations.  As a culminating activity, students will have to write their own Pourquoi stories.  This will allow students to refine their writing skills in preparation for fourth grade.  Students will type their final copies this week.

Students are also completing their last sessions of book clubs.  Students will prepare a group presentation demonstrating their opinions about the characters' actions, the author's use of language, etc.

We are almost finished reading Mr. Popper's Penguins.  Students will get to vote on the last book for our read aloud.

Science:  Seed Germination.

Math:  Unit 9 (problem solving with multiplication and division; two-digit by one-digit multiplication)

Homework:

Reading:  Students will be assigned a minimum amount of time to read each night.  They will record their reading in a reading log.
