IT'S SUMMER TIME!

Studies have shown that all students experience learning losses when not engaged in educational activities during the summer. On average, students lose about 2.6 months of grade level equivalency during the summer. How can you prevent this so called "brain drain"? Well, here are some ideas for you:
Reinforce math skills - 1. Practice multiplication facts using flashcards. 2. Review place value, rounding, subtracting, adding, percentages, decimals, and fractions when shopping. 3. Convert measurements in everyday life when doing things like cooking or sewing.
Continue writing - use a journal to record all of your summer activities. Don't forget proper paragraph and sentence structure!
Use trips to the museums, the zoo, parks, and the library to create meaningful learning experiences.
In middle school, students are expected to exhibit a high level of responsibility and independence. Encourage your child to demonstrate these traits around the house by giving them long terms tasks to complete in a pre-determined time period.
Read, read, read! Summertime is the perfect time to read for the sheer pleasure of it! From chapter books to comic books any reading is good reading! Many students may have already received reading lists from their middle schools. Don't wait until the last minute to get those books read. Time flies!
HAVE A FUN AND SAFE SUMMER BREAK!

WHAT DOES BEING IN FIFTH GRADE MEAN?
Fifth graders are the leaders at Roberts Elementary. It is imperative that in whatever they do, our fifth graders set a good example for the other students who look up to them. I have no doubt that they will be able to accomplish this. This is a year of learning responsibility and preparing for middle school. Fifth graders should be ready to have more homework than they have been accustomed to. There will be homework every night, including Friday. It is the students’, not the parents’, responsibility to bring all materials to and from school each day, complete homework, redo any failing grades, and study for tests. All fifth grade teachers work their hardest to be sure that the students leave Roberts Elementary as prepared for middle school as they can be. With the help and support we receive from our fabulous parents, we know we can be successful! Fifth grade is also a year of fun! Fifth graders get to do more than any other grade level! Only fifth graders get to participate in Roberts Idol and Art Club. Only fifth graders get to go to Lanier for their graduation ceremony. Fifth graders also get to go to Camp Olympia and Schlitterbahn! WOW!
