Fabulous Fourth Graders !

Student Led Picnic Conferences:

Most of you were able to enjoy your portfolio picnics last week.  The kids were so excited to have this special time with you.  If any of you were not yet able to make it, but would like to, please just let me know.  Any day next week at 11:10 would be great.  Alternatively, you could meet with your child following Friday's awards presentation.

I've listed below a summary of our current focus for fourth grade.

IB Planner

Our current IB planner is:

Title:  History of Art 101

Central Idea: We express our ideas, feelings and beliefs through art.

Our focus will be on Greek and Roman mythology and the associated art from that era.

Current Focus by Subject

Math:  Percents, decimals and fractions.  Discount problems.  Rates.

Reading:  Our current class read aloud is Three Cups of Tea (the young readers edition).  This is the true story of Greg Mortenson, a mountain- climber-turned humanitarian who has built more than 60 schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan in an effort to spread peace through education.  Issues which may arise related to this book include the Afghanistan war, the Muslim faith, and the ways people can solve problems through peaceful measures.  The events of September 11 are also referenced in this book.  I encourage you to discuss this with your child as they may have additional questions.

Writing:  All fourth grade teachers have attended The Columbia University Writers Workshop training.  We will be following this curriculum and look forward to sharing the students' writing this year.

Science:  Plants, Animals, and Adaptations.

Social Studies:  We are continuing our study of Texas History.  We are also learning about Pakistan/Afghanistan as part of our read aloud, Three Cups of Tea.

Thanks for all of your help and supprot.  We're having a great year!
