SchoolNotes.com - Linking Educators to the Community
Greetings from the Cook Class!

I want to give a BIG THANKS to all of my parent volunteers last week! Y'all were an enormous help during the field trip and carnival - many, many thanks!!

Last week, I sent home about 6 book order catalogs from Scholastic. This is the perfect time to start getting a set of books together for summer. These book orders provide an excellent opportunity to purchase cheaply-priced books for your child. Please look over those catalogs and return any order forms NO LATER than Friday, May 16. (This will allow time for the books to arrive before school is out.)

Our last Library Day is tomorrow, Tuesday, May 17. Please return all books!

The second grade team has scheduled our Awards Day for May 21st at 2:00. On this day, you are invited to come into the classroom and view pieces from your child's second grade portfolio. If you would like to have a student-led conference with your child, this is the perfect opportunity for them to show you their work from the year. If you are interested, please sign and return the reservation form that was included in last week's Tuesday folder. The "Awards Ceremony" will begin at 2:10, so please arrive around 1:50 or 2:00 to have your student-led conference.

Reader's Workshop: We are reading nonfiction materials about weather and taking notes on important information.

Writer's Workshop & Language Arts: We are reviewing vocabulary words and talking about different meanings of the same words. We are discussing how the context in which a word is written determines its meaning.

Math: We are continuing to work on Unit 10, about money.

Social Studies & Science: Our science and social studies plans will be tied to our reading plans for the next week or so, due to the content of our new planner. It is a planner focused on extreme weather like hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, droughts, and blizzards, as well as other types of storms. The students will be involved in a research project similar to the one they had completed for the habitat planner.

Please remember to have your child read at least twenty minutes every night. You could help your child with their reading comprehension by asking them questions such as: Who are the characters? What happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story? Did the characters have a problem? How did they solve their problem? What has happened so far? What do you think will happen next?

Current Planner: Wacky Weather
Central Idea: Extreme weather affects living things and geography.
It is an inquiry into types of extreme weather, causes of extreme weather, effects of extreme weather, and tools using for predicting weather.

Some Favorite Links:
  • Starfall This is an EXCELLENT website for reading, phonics, and spelling. It has everything from ABCs to nonfiction to poetry. Use this link!
  • Dolch Sight Words This website provides 2nd and 3rd grade sight words. The words are already on flashcards, all you need to do is print and practice! Some of these sight words have irregular properties, that is why we need to memorize them. Make sure that your child can read all of the sight words for 2nd grade.
  • Working with Words This site is useful for practicing high frequency words, spelling patterns, and phonics patterns.
  • Reading & Math Activities A great site to help review reading and math skills.
  • Everyday Mathematics Games These games directly correlate to the lessons and games from our Everyday Mathematics curriculum.
  • A+ Math Here, you are able to make your own math flashcards and much more!
  • Teach R Kids This is a good website for practice problems in all areas of math. You can set the level for your child.
  • Internet For Classrooms This website covers all the math concepts that we will study this year. It has beginning and advanced levels. Some of the games are great, but some are not so good. Explore and find something that works for you and your child!
