Welcome to our classroom website!

1.    Our class will present Aesop’s Fables plays to parents on Friday, May 16 at in the school cafeteria.  Our class Award Ceremony will take place immediately following the end of the plays.  Please plan to attend your child’s play and award ceremony.  Don’t forget your camera!

2.    Please send your child’s animal costume to school during the week of May 5 – May 9.   Again, the costume’s head component or mask should not conceal the identity of your child.

3.    Our class still needs volunteers to help at the Friday, May 9, School Carnival.  We will operate the Cascarones Booth. (Cascarones are eggshells filled with confetti paper.)

Your child’s April 29th Tuesday Communication Folder included a letter from me about the carnival that asked for volunteers.  I have only received four responses!   We need two to four parents for each time period.  Please circle which time period(s) you prefer to assist, and return the letter tomorrow.

After I have received all of the parent responses, I will send a volunteer schedule.  Your time is an important contribution to our school.  Thank you for your assistance!

4.    Your child must be supervised during attendance at the May 9th School Carnival.  If your child will be attending the carnival beginning at , please tell the adult providing supervision to be at our classroom door by .  If there is no adult at our classroom door, your child will be required to wait at the dismissal area.  I am not permitted to send first graders out to the carnival unattended.

5.    All library books must be returned on or before Friday, May 16.

6.     All Book Trade books must be returned to school on or before Friday, May 16

7.    On Wednesday, May 21, first graders will participate in student-led conferences.  Each child will share his/her portfolio with a parent.  (The teachers will not be involved in the discussions.)  Please be waiting by our classroom at on May 21st in order to share this experience with your child.  All student-led conferences must be completed by .  Be advised that if you must arrive late, your child will still be required to stop at .

8.    Our class will have an end-of-the-year party at on Wednesday, May 28.  I will send a letter requesting specific food contributions later this month.  Please send the requested food contribution to school on Tuesday, May 27.

9.    Thursday, May 29 is a dismissal day.

10.    I would like to extend special thanks to Mrs. Wetzel (Paul’s mom), Mrs. Lahat (Noa’s mom), and Mrs. Huda (Sameer’s mom) for chaperoning multiple field trips, organizing Tuesday Folder papers every week, leading our class’ school garden effort, and/or helping with multiple student activities that required the presence of additional adults for success.   I know that your children also greatly appreciate their contributions to our classroom.

11.    Enrichment summer school is not available for HISD first graders from Roberts Elementary.  Only first graders that HISD qualifies for remedial summer school will be permitted or required to attend.  Remedial summer school is usually limited to the month of June.  If your child is required or requested to attend remedial summer school, our school office will notify you in writing.

12.   To avoid academic regression during the summer, make sure your child reads to you 20 minutes or more every day.  In second grade, your child will be expected to memorize all addition and subtraction facts through sum 20, for faster response time.  The fact triangles you have received will be helpful for summer math practice.  Additionally, I recommend that you have your child write in a journal at least 15 minutes every day.

13.   If you would like to e-mail me, please use my school e-mail address, ssheets@houstonisd.org.

14.   Thank you for a wonderful school year!  I have thoroughly enjoyed working with your children.  Have a terrific summer, and keep in touch next school year!
