LEGENDS AND LORE SCRAPBOOK ASSIGNMENT:

Legends and Lore Scrapbook

Without oral traditions, the stories of our past would slowly disappear. Preserve your own stories for the future by writing an original American story, legend or folk tale and creating original illustrations to accompany these stories. The legend and lore will be displayed together in a scrapbook collection and placed in the library. Then, enjoy a minstrel show as stories are presented to the class.

Try writing:
    American Indian folklore
    An Uncle Remus tale
    A local color story
    A cultural folk tale
    State lore
    A story about your family history
    A Tall Tale
    An urban myth
    A special event in your family’s past

You can choose from various creative literary formats including (but not limited to):
    Write a first person narrative
    Write a poem
    Compose a folk song
    Script a play

Design a visual presentation for your lore. This must be exactly 18 inches square and must include your text, at least two illustrations, and a one inch border. The illustrations and border will be linked to your story. Examples for art include (but are not limited to):
    Cultural elements
    Folk art
    Original illustrations
    Three dimensional objects (not too heavy, it must stay glued to the paper)
    Photographs

For the presentation show, you will need to memorize your original story and present it to the class. A cultural element is required, such as a costume or a prop. You may:
    Tell a story with or without a dialect
    Dramatize a play
    Sing an original song

This assignment will be two major grades.
Please complete and return the attached rubrics.
