The health classes are the same as the high school health class curriculum; therefore, students who pass this class will receive the 1/2 credit necessary for high school graduation. The health class is taught in the fall semester, and the fitness class is taught in the spring semester. The fitness class, if passed, will give the student 1/2 credit to be used for PE or as an elective at the student's discretion.
Topics covered in the Health class include: Introduction to Health and Wellness, Self-Esteem, Decision Making, Peer Pressure, and Stress and Stress Management, Mental Health, Violence Prevention, Substance Use and Abuse, Sexuality, Nutrition, Diet Analysis, Disease Prevention, and Environmental and Community Health. The students will also be certified in CPR/AED and receive some training in First Aid. In the Foundations of Fitness class, the students will learn more detailed nutrition facts and more about the body systems, and will learn and practice weight training and aerobic exercises.
Students are given a weekly grade report at the beginning of each week so that they are constantly aware of their status in the class.
Explorers- Theatre Arts
This class teaches students the basics of theatre performances. In order to establish self-esteem and improve their ability to be confident in public speaking situations, your child will experience performances from mime to acting out written scripts. They will practice their writing skills by writing scripts, speaking skills from "newscasts" and published scripts, spatial awareness from puppetry, and body awareness from performances of all kinds. Students will learn theatre terminology and experience a variety of forms of performances from mime to reader's theatre, and from video performances to live plays. They will learn the basics of Theatre History.
The class is one semester long, and the students will rotate to another Explorer class in Art.
I hand out grade reports on a weekly basis if the class has had an assignment for that week. However, whenever a grade is taken, the student will have a revised average and a new grade report at the end of the next week.
