Welcome to English 9!
Textbook:  We will read from the district-mandated text Literature and Language Arts, Third Course.
Required Literature: Of Mice and Men, Romeo and Juliet and The Odyssey

Vocabulary: We will learn vocabulary from the textbook as well as supplemental materials to support and enhance the reading selections as well as Greek and Latin roots.

Writing: We will write, write, write!  We will begin with sentence structure and progress into multiple paragraph essays and research papers.  Everyone needs to know how to properly write academic work and we will learn how to do this by emphasizing grammar, mechanics, spelling, vocabulary, organization, etc.

Speaking: We all know how to speak, but we will work at improving academic speech.  Hopefully, by the time you leave this class, you will be able to speak publically better than when you first started.  We will do several speeches/presentations throughout the term as well as daily group or partner work.

Listening: Again, we all know how to hear things, but we need to hone our listening skills.  Everything from listening to directions, taking dictation, and listening to song lyrics will be implemented in this class as skill building exercises.

Materials: You are expected at all times to bring paper to class, a pen and a binder in which to keep your papers.  I do not supply these things so if you run out or forget your materials, please borrow what you need from a classmate.  I will supply you with a binder to be kept in class for Academic Literacy work.

Contact: You can reach me at 657-4070 ext. 27226 or at ecunningham@fremont.k12.ca.us. I am available before school, at the beginning of lunch and most days after school.  If these times are not convenient, we can arrange a meeting or phone call at a time that is better for you.  Please keep in mind that the best way to contact me is by e-mail at the above address.  You can also find information on the class and a link to my email at www.schoolnotes.com/94538/cunningham.html.

Basic family classroom rules: The following rules will be enforced by all of our family teachers and are meant to allow everyone distraction-free learning. If a cell phone, iPod or other electronic device is visible it will be confiscated immediately and held until after school that day.  Students are not allowed to chew gum during class.  Students not in class by the tardy bell will be required to make up time after school with the teacher and will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with the teacher on the work that was missed when the student was late.

Grading: The majority of the grade will be based on essays and tests.  There will be a test or quiz every Friday on the material we learned during that week and previous weeks.  An essay will be due approximately once a week.  Specifically, the grade is determined in the following way:

40% of the grade is writing and essays
30% is tests and quizzes
5-10% is homework
15-20% is all other assignments

The grading scale is as follows:
97-100    A+    87-89    B+    77-79   C+    67-69   D+
93-96    A    83-86    B    73-76   C    63-66   D
90-92   A-    80-82    B-    70-72   C-    60-62   D-
