In attendance: , Cindy Riordan, Dan Knak, Carole Parks, Rick Barth, Elaina West, Krystal Priniski, Jill Andrews, Lauren Mishlove, Melissa Reddy
Guests: Laurie Smith, Ann Brodsky
Call to Order/ Guest Speaker: Meeting was called to order by Elaina West at 3:45 p.m. Laurie Smith, UPC parent representative on the District Override Committee. Laurie gave us an overview of the override process. On May 21, the PVUSD board will decide if the override will be put on the ballot again for voting. Since the last override didn’t pass, 5 million dollars has been taken away from the 2009-10 budget. If the next override doesn’t pass an additional 5 million will be taken away from the 2010-2011 budget. To insure passage, ballot language must be changed, information must be disseminated early to catch absentee voters, and more parents must be encouraged to vote. More information will be given out as to how the Shea PTSA can help present this information to the public.
Minutes of 4/2/09 – approved as corrected.

A new Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Instruction will be announced at the the PVUSD board meeting tonight. The District is implementing a conservation committee and Shea will be part of it. March 11 at 10:15 is the program “The Underground World of Teenagers” at district offices, 32nd street and Nesbit. Usually programs are pod cast on I-Tunes; Google PVUSD. The UPC is honoring teachers and staff members in the district at a May Governing Board Meeting. Please pick-up your “Teacher Staff Nomination Form” at the front desk or contact Cindy Riordan through Cheri Frye at the front desk.

The PTSA will be proactive in marketing the fundraiser during the 2009-2010 school year starting with a table displaying the magazines and products at Back to School Night on August 23rd and better signage.
Promotion Dance: Elaina will check to see if snacks can be sold.
Book Fair: How can we make it more profitable? Suggestions were maybe during conferences to have an extension of the book fair in the cafeteria so people can browse while they wait to see the teachers, have better signage directing people to the book fair in the library, and a larger selection of books and products.
Parent Involvement: discussion about the role of this new committee. After much parent involvement in elementary schools, parents of middle school students aren’t sure what opportunities are available. Krystal Priniski, the new committee chair will touch base with Dan regarding the requirements for parents to help in the classroom and in other volunteer positions. This information should be known before start of the 2009-10 school year so Shea will be ready to recruit volunteers. .

Minutes of Shea PTSA Meeting Held on February 5, 2009
1. In attendance: Dan Knak, Elaina West, Kurt Sachen, Rick Barth, Carole Parks, Cindy Riordan, Melissa Reddy, Krystal Priniski, Lauren Mishlove
2. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 3:40 by Elaina West. Elaina introduced Carolyn Cook with Rich Brands. Carolyn has been the fundraising chair at Desert Cove and introduced Vita Bath (also sold at Penny’s and other places) which could be a fundraiser for Shea. 25% of sales would go back to the school in the form of a rebate check. People buy “on line” submitting the Shea “code”. Shipping is free with a purchase of $40 Hopefully people will like the product and order it again. Keep campaign open for six months so people can reorder. E-mail blasts would be sent out by Carolyn to the parents. Some incentives (prizes) could be provided by Carolyn.
3. Minutes of January 1/15/09 – Corrections: Call to order was at 3:36 p.m... January 26 and 27th were the dates of the teacher’s conferences. Don’t list a committee if no report was given, i.e. Student Council Report. Add minutes approved as corrected and minutes approved as written.
4. Presidents Message: The time for budget cuts and spending less is here. Our PTSA will be called upon more and more to fulfill what district will not be able to do. Stand strong and hopefully we can make a difference. Go to state and national PTSA websites to keep informed about what is going on. Thanks for your help.
5. Principals Message: Dan hasn’t heard anything definitive from the district on how the budget cuts will affect Shea. Possibilities are larger student-teacher class ratios and some programming cuts or reductions. There is no need to buy any new equipment because Shea has enough desks, tables, and equipment. There may be more learning on line reducing the need for books. On the bright side, the budget cuts may make us work with less without sacrificing instruction. Krystal Priniski asked how parents can help and Dan said now is the time to ask parents to give their support to teachers by aiding at the school, etc., especially for the 09-10 school year. This should be advertised through the PTSA website, e-mail bank, 6th grade visitation, etc. Possibly start with setting up a parent involvement committee through the PTSA and site council. District offices are interviewing four prospective district school superintendents to fulfill Mr. Kriekard’s position including Mr. Lee. The rest are out of state. Dan asked for forty new Harkins passes for the AR program; it’s very successful.

Margo Bell is asking for $55 to attend the Holocaust Educators Conference in March. Mr. Knak made a motion to grant her the money and Carole Parks seconded it. Elaina West expressed concern over the reputation Shadow has regarding the use of temporary teachers instead of permanent ones for core subjects. Mr. Knak suggested she contact Mr. von Gretchen, the principal. Cindy said he has several “open meetings” with him for parents to attend throughout the year. Contact the SMHS website for dates.

The week of January 26 will be high school registration, on-line at school or at home. On January 27 at 7p.m. there will be a two hour Showcase, for 8th graders to become familiar with SMHS .There may be a date change from the 27 to the 29. On half days Shea will start getting out at 11:30 a.m. and SMHS will get out at 11:00 a.m. Since the PVUSD over-ride was voted down and the district’s declining enrollment, there will be a 15-18 million dollar deficit district-wide. Kids and parents can find out more information about the Millionaires Club from the libraries link. Dan said that the district office will have to decide how to handle the failure to pass the PVUSD budget override. He will let everybody know when he hears. Maybe people didn’t realize that the override was for teachers and programs, not facilities. There were only three school districts that didn’t pass the override and P.V. was one of them. It is the first time that P.V. hasn’t passed it. Dan encourages parents to not send their children to McDonalds by themselves during half days because there is no supervision. The promotion dance is the Tuesday after Memorial Day and Big Surf is the Friday before Memorial Day.
