During the next 2 weeks students in Pre-Algebra and Leap will be reviewing material for the AIMS state test.  We will be using the Buckle Down books in class.  There will be little to no homework during these next two weeks.

AIMS testing is April 7-11 in the hours before lunch.  Please ensure your child gets plenty of rest, eats an energizing breakfast and brings snacks to eat through the day.

If you would like information for your child to help them study for the 8th grade math portion of the AIMS test, please email me and I will return your email with an attached power point presentation.  Thank you!

Telephone: 520-568-7100 ext. 3045
Prep period: 6th hour

Course Information: The objective of pre-algebra is to prepare the student to the study of algebra.  Pre-algebra includes:  whole numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, properties of operations, simple roots and powers, order of operations, equations, variables, geometry, area, volume and perimeter.  Pre-algebra takes everything the students have learned in K -7th grade math and applies the information in new ways.  There is a great deal of new material that the students will be expected to master.
Text, Readings, Materials
Textbook(s):  The students will receive a copy of the McDougal Littell Pre-Algebra book to keep at home.  The book is to be returned to the school at the end of the year.  Any books not returned will be replaced at the expense of the student or parent.  Students do not need to bring textbooks to class.  There is a class set which shall remain in class.
Materials:
„«    One 3-subject spiral notebook
„«    One folder to keep quizzes and tests in.
„«    3 Sharpened pencils.
„«    Agendas
Calculators, graphing paper, scrap paper, colored pencils, highlighters, rulers, protractors, and other necessary materials may be brought to class.  If extra materials for projects are needed, students will be given prior notification.
Course Descriptions/Objectives:  The students will understand the principles of Pre-algebra and be able to apply them in various real-life situations by taking notes during class lectures, discussing ideas with classmates and the teacher, completing daily assignments in the classroom and at home, daily and weekly assessments, and by class activities and projects.  The students will also increase their problem-solving skills in mathematics.
Course Calendar/Schedule:  See attached calendar.
Course Policies: The students will follow the Maricopa Wells Middle School discipline policy and follow all classroom rules.
General Class Rules:
„«    Be on time.
„«    Show respect to all, including yourself, your teacher, and your classmates.
„«    Listen carefully to all directions the first time they are given.
„«    Raise your hand to offer your comments or ask a question; wait to be called on.
„«    Make use of your math learning in math class.
„«    Be prepared daily with all necessary materials (pencils, notebook, agenda, homework, etc.)
„«    The teacher will dismiss you, not the bell.
Behavioral Consequences
When a student chooses not to follow the classroom guidelines and/or to disrupt the class, the following will occur:
„«    Up to 2 warnings during a class period (the 2nd warning may result in a seat change and a short teacher-student conference).
„«    After school detention with a phone call home.
„«    Referral - an automatic referral may be given for fighting, stealing, or infringing upon other safety issues, as deemed necessary by the teacher.
Attendance, lateness:  Students should make every effort to be in class.  If an absence is required, the student will be expected to get the notes and assignments that were missed.  All assignments are posted on my website weekly.  Tardies will NOT be tolerated and will be handled according to the school tardy policy.   Please refer to the Maricopa Wells tardy policy.
Class participation/Homework:  Homework will be given Monday through Thursday.  The homework will contain approximately 10-20 problems and take more or less 15 minutes to complete. Use daily class notes for help.   Homework will be checked for completion daily and receive credit if complete. If an assignment is incomplete, the student will receive a ‘§zero‘¨ for the homework and their agenda will be highlighted.  Please check agendas daily; it is a great tool for communication.   Late assignments will be accepted.
Missed exams or assignments:  If a student is absent for less than three days, he or she will be given two days for each day missed to make up any missed assignments.  Longer absences will be handled on an individual basis. Missing assignments can be found on the school web site, or by checking the agenda information posted in the classroom.  The student is responsible for getting this information as soon as he or she returns from the absence.
Unexcused absences will not be given the opportunity to makeup their work and will receive a ԤzeroԬ in the grade book.
Academic dishonesty:  Students are expected to complete their own work for class.  While students may work together to complete assignments, each person should be contributing equally.  Cheating will not be tolerated.  If a student chooses to cheat, the assignment will receive a grade of zero and the student will be referred to the Dean of Discipline.
Grading:  Assessments will be given at the end of a unit of study.  The students will be given adequate notice to prepare for the assessment.  Students will also be graded on homework completion and in class group assignments.  Grades are posted on the website on a weekly basis.  Feel free to contact me with any comments or questions regarding your student‘¦s grade.
