Welcome to Maricopa Wells Middle School for the 2008-09 school year. I am excited about this coming school year and all that it has in store for us. Very soon work will begin on our new gym as well as our track and fields. That is going to present some challenges for our staff and students but the end result will benefit all.
Just to give you a little background on me: I am a certified physical education teacher with my SEI endorsement. This is my 30th year of teaching middle school physical education. I have taught in Wyoming, California, and Arizona. I belong to several professional organizations. I enjoy attending conferences to keep updated on the ever changing physical education curriculum. I was born and raised in San Diego. I not only graduated from San Diego State but I received my teaching certificate from there as well. I have been married for 30 years and have 3 adult boys. This is my second year at MWMS and I live in Maricopa.
I want to mention that Physical Education does have a uniform. That uniform consists of plain black shorts and a plain white T-shirt. Our student store sells those items for the following prices:
Black shorts- $12.00
White T-shirt- $8.00
Total cost- $20.00
You don't have to buy the uniform from us but if you do the money goes to our student council. They use the money for school dances, sports uniforms and equipment, and sport officials. If you do purchase the uniform from a dept. store, please purchase in the school uniform colors. Students will need to have athletic shoes that can be secured to their feet. No sandals, skater shoes, or slip-ons.
We do not have a locker room with lockers and locks, so students carry their uniform in their backpacks everyday to change. The boys will change in my office/ storage room until our gym is built.
Week #1- I will be sending home a syllabus with your child. Please look through the information in that pamphlet as it explains to you what we intend to accomplish with your child this year. It includes our philosophy, the dress policy, our 6-8 curriculum, and grading/assessment. A health notification form will be handed out to students in my classes that have specific health issues that I need to know about (ex.- asthma, allergies, seizures, etc.). Please let me know if your child has any health issues. I ask my students to bring their own water, to mark their name on it, and not to share their bottled water. We do have access to water in the cafeteria and various areas around campus. However, we do not have access to water out on the track or fields. There are machines that sell bottled water on campus, but they are not always a reliable source(out of bottles, no change, vandalism, etc.). Hydration is very important safety issue in this class. Students are also encouraged to use sunscreen.
Week #2- We will be changing out into our PE uniform starting the second week. My classes will be practicing roll call procedures, stretching routines, squad line responsibilities, safety concerns and procedures. Our school-wide LifeTime Skills Program for character building will be introduced as well.
I look forward to working with you and your child. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call me at (520) 568-7100 ex.- 3085 or contact me by e-mail: jthudium@musd20.org.
