Symbols of The Glass Menagerie
a. Jim emissary from the real world where people connect and are productive in society
He breaks the unicorn and keeps the “horse” as a souvenir of their meeting-he dances with Laura like a ‘normal’ girl and flirts. He breaks through the defenses of Laura to connect with her. However, Laura is not a normal girl and her giving away of the horse underlines that fact. Tom wishes Laura to “blow out the candles” at the end of the story which may signify both Laura’s need to quit wishing and join the real world and her inability to do anything but continue to wish.
b. In what way does Tom fail to participate effectively in reality? While his family should not be his responsibility, they are, and do you think it is all right for him to leave them? What does the fire escape represent for Tom? What does catching his coat mean? Why does he accidentally break glass animals when he throws his coat why might this be foreshadowing?
c. What is Amanda’s escape?
Themes
Escape from reality and inability to accept life as it occurs.
Abandonment as a coping mechanism and what it does to the people who so schoose
Memory and conscience

On the research paper
Revisions of works cited and citations are due on Friday-I will not take papers for grade adjustment beyond Friday-this Friday. Highlight all changes which are corrections on your revised paper. I will not be able to award more credit unless changes are accessible, organized, complete, and marked. Please remember that the grading rubric is stringent- a correction of a couple of items, when all citations are in error, will likely be of no benefit. The grading commentary on your papers is extensive and I expect you to use your MLA resources; I am happy to clarify points for you, read my handwriting for you, show you anything you do not understand how to do-short of doing the corrections for you, of course.

Is it important that it is an area made of the waste products of civilization? If Dr. Eckleburg represents God, why is the symbol one dimensional, garish, and posted over the most dismal area in the book? What else is decayed besides the landscape?
9. Compare the party with Daisy to the party with Myrtle-is it significant the Myrtle is the name of a common, hardy, plant?
10. What are the rumors about Gatsby p48?
11. Does the “owl-eyed-man” look wise? p50 What might his appearance and comments (about the library) indicate about how Gatsby wishes to be perceived? What is the difference between the admiring and drunken eyes of Owl-eyes and those of Dr. Eckleberg? What might each of these represent?
