Write a postcard
-    Review textbook pp. 66-70
-    Discuss with your group the difficulties faced by the early farmers on the Mesopotamian plain.
-    Apply what you have read and discussed by writing a postcard to a “family member” still living in the Zagros Mts.

Be sure to use vocabulary words and include important information about how your life is influenced by the geography of the river plain.
Write your “published” version on the paper provided. Proofread your work!
Cut it out and glue it onto a piece of poster paper or construction paper the same size.
Include an illustration related to ancient Mesopotamia. Use the textbook for ideas or print pictures off the internet.

Language Arts:
- Story charts/Literary Analysis due tomorrow.
For "The Sand Castle" you were writing examples of either the environment OR technology and then its effect on the characters.
For "All Summer in a Day" write down evidence to show realistic details from the story and "fantastic" details from the story.

Neolithic Advertisement
Design an ad that could be a part of a Neolithic Magazine (obviously, we know that writing was not yet invented ) Convince a hunter-gatherer that farming is the way to go!
Include the following:
-    A “catchy” slogan
-    Convincing information from the textbook and your notes
-    An illustration
-    Color
-    Neatness, effort and accuracy!

What a great 1st day! I'm sure it will be a wonderful year with such awesome, polite students!

Class information will be discussed and distributed tomorrow. Social Studies textbooks went home today. This book should stay at home.

For Social Studies: If possible, please bring in a magazine to use for making a collage on Friday. Also, save a paper towel tube if you can.

Welcome to 6th grade Language Arts and Ancient Civilizations!  I hope you all had a relaxing summer and are looking forward to starting off a great new school year in Middle School! I'm excited to see you all on the 1st day!

Language Arts: Be sure you have read Maroo of the Winter Caves. We will be doing some activities related to the novel, beginning Sept. 14th. There will be a quiz on the book Sept. 18th.

Ancient Civilizations: If possible, please save a cardboard paper towel tube from home. ( If you can save a few and share with others...that would be great.)

Supplies:

- a separate folder OR tabbed section in a binder or accordian folder labeled specifically for each class

- single subject, spiral notebook labeled for Ancient Civilizations  (not a section in a multi-subject notebook)

- soft cover composition book for Language Arts

- glue sticks, pencil/pen pouch or box, colored pencils or crayons, covered pencil sharpener

Supplies won't be needed until the 14th and will be explained further on the 1st day.
