5/1/2009 We are working on editorials this week. Take a stand!
SWINE FLU UPDATE
If you have any questions, here is a link from the CDC for parents. Keep washing those hands, covering mouths when you cough/sneeze, and stay hydrated.
Some words from our Principal...
Because I have received a number of e-mails with concerns
around the Swine Flu, I wanted to send a brief e-mail as to what the district
and our school are doing for preventative measures and what you can do as a
parent.
First, if there is any school closure related to the
Swine Flu, you will be notified by an emergency call and e-mail with details
related to the closure.
Second, all teachers have been asked to inform students
about the Swine Flu and assist in providing them more information related to
the virus. We also want to quell any fears they may have with regard to it
being on campus. Once that rumor gets started, we know that in middle school it
spreads within minutes,if not seconds. There will also be signs posted on every
bathroom door reminding students to wash their hands frequently and for at
least 20 seconds along with covering their mouths when coughing, etc. We will
make sure that all soap dispensers have plenty of soap at all times.
We will also be distributing sanitizing supplies to
teachers so that they may keep desks, door knobs, computers and anything else
germ free. If you feel you need to send your student with his/her own personal
sanitizer, please feel free to do so. We will provide some in the classroom as
well.
Lastly, if your child is sick for any reason, (fatigued,
cough, temperature, etc) please keep him/her home until the illness has passed.
This would also go for any public/sporting event.
I hope this provides you with enough information and I
will continue to keep you abreast of any details I receive until we hear from
the county that we are in the clear.
First Assignment - Due Friday at the end of class - they do NOT need to be typed.

Feb 2-6 2009
We are working on two sets of stories: (1) MOVIE REVIEWS from the recently viewed movie "Hoodwinked"; and (2) BEAT stories for the yearbook.
Throughout the week we will be revising and learning about:
leads - how to develop, write and spice up the beginning of stories
story format - what each type of story should "look" and "sound" like
identification - how to identify people in your stories
Five W's and H - making sure that all stories contain these elements so that the reader gets all their questions answered
As we learn the skill, students will be asked to revise their stories to be sure they have covered the topic practiced and learned in class for both stories. The goal is to have two completed stories done by the end of the week.
Additional photo assignments will be given throughout the week for the yearbook editors.
JAN 12- 16h
We have been reviewing the differences between a journalism story and a standard essay with a MY ACCESS story. In order to get full points for revising, students needed to have saved and finished later, and revised for a total of four (4) "submissions" before Thursday, Jan. 15th. The idea is to get students used to revising work to make improvements over time rather than waiting for the last minute to turn in and/or work on writing.
A separate grade will be given for the completed essay.
We also learned some language of the discipline including the parts of the newspaper. Students worked in cooperative groups to make a mock-up newspaper using the terms to help visually see what the terms mean. We also got to see an example of a banner headline courtesy of the Miracle on the Hudson.
Essays will be polished on Tuesday and a quiz will also be given on that day.
January 5 - 9th
This week we are reviewing the differences between journalism and essay writing. We are finishing the scavenger hunts that we started with the Journalism Fortune Tellers and reviewing story structure, the purposes of the newspaper.
An essay was assigned on Monday, Jan. 5th that is due January 16th. The essay requires a rough draft and at least two revisions be turned in before the 16th. We reviewed how to use the myaccess program and gave out passwords for those who have not yet used the program in other classes.
Greetings and welcome back to school! We are working on an essay and in both classes, someone asked the dreaded question – “how long does it have to be” and the class got a chance to jog around the blacktop, as promised during the first week of school.
I have talked with the students about the fact that asking how long doesn’t really help much as some students can get a point across in one paragraph while others need 10 to convey the same information. I prefer that the work on what they are trying to say and how effectively they are able to do so, rather than to count words or fill in unneeded paragraphs. So, hopefully, no more practice for Ice Cream Mountain at Outdoor Science School will occur.
DECEMBER 8 - 12th
Welcome to class! This week we are:
learning how to log into all the class websites
get to know the classwebsite
practice and get a baseline for keyboarding
learning the difference between journalism and other types of writing
HOMEWORK: Review class notes and practice logging into various class websites. CLASSWORK: Complete the notes for the moodle assignment on Friday.
LAST WEEK OF CLASS!
Students are completing their Final Exam - their Beat Story. Students were given a topic, and required to come up with an idea for a story. Then students needed to think of questions, set up interviews (as needed) to get the story completed by middle of class on Wednesday.
Two editors will have to look over the stories and add some comments before a final revision to the story. The final version must be both uploaded and copied and pasted into a schoolnotes email by end of class on Thursday.
FRIDAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF YOUR NEW CLASS!
Election Week
WEDNESDAY NITE Review the SURVEY WRITING DRILL handout -- we will complete it in class on Friday. - Think about three survey story ideas and the choices you will give your respondents to choose from. Ponder as we will work on approving on Friday.
Thursday you will be working on writing commericals and spots for TV and radio with the guest teacher. Watch the DVD and then do the work :)
What's Up?
Journalism bootcamp continues! We are entering the world of the interview so be prepared for some questions as we work on how to get information from sources. Students have practiced writing question and completed their first interviews on Friday and others will finish their interviews on Monday.
Feature stories are the next type of story we will be working on followed by editorials and review articles. Students will then be assigned "beats" and will be responsible for print, podcasts, and a video news segment. Hold onto your hats -- we're about to start deadlines and production.
If you want to hear about what we are doing, click on the THIS WEEK IN JOURNALISM link near the top of the page and click on "Listen to our Voices".
