Course Description:

Fundamentals of Art:
"Students learn about aesthetic perception, creative expression, art heritage, and aesthetic valuing and their applications with experiences in drawing, painting, design, crafts, ceramics, printmaking, graphics, sculpture, design, and/or lettering."

Class Homework Policy:

There will be weekly homework assigned for this class.  In most cases it will be assigned on Thursdays and due on the following Wednesdays.  It is due at the beginning of the class period when the bells rings.  It should take a minimum of one hour to be completed outside of class.  In addition to the weekly homework assignments there will be some long range projects on which the students will be expected to work over several days and/or weeks.  Homework may be turned-in one day late only for half credit.  After one day late there will be no credit earned.

Trimester #1
EC #1 Due: Wednesday, November 5th, 2008.

Trimester #2
EC #2 Due: Wednesday, March 4th, 2009.

Trimester #3
EC #3 Due: Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009.

*Art Class Extra Credit Assignment:
See the “Current Events in the Art World” hand-out &/or attachment on Teacher website.
Follow all the directions on the handout.
The article must be about Art.
The assignment may be turned-in at any time before (but not after) each due date.
This is an optional assignment.

The merchants will automatically donate a percentage of every purchase to our class account.  
I registered all my credit cards, ATM card, and grocery club cards.  
It probably took about 2 minutes and I was done!  
Now every purchase I make the art class account gets money.  
It is a win-win situation.

Register your Macy's credit card with eScrip.

Macy's gives up to 6% of the sales back to the classroom through the eScrip program.  But we can't get the money if you aren't signed up.  

Parents,  please participate in this class fundraiser - or - (if you don't have a Macy's card)
find a friend to register their card with this program.
  
If every student had just one person each register their Macy's card, think about the money the class could get!  If every student had 3 or more people register, think about the possibilities!!

Do you use a cell phone??
Do you use a computer with a printer??
Then YOU need to listen to this!!
Please bring in your old cell phones and your empty ink cartridges (of all sizes and variations) to ESMS to be recycled. Special recycling boxes are located in the school office, the Art Room, and the Band Room. (Look for the recycle logo on the box.)
Got questions? Ask any Art Student or Band Student.
Recycle ~ It is everyone's responsibility!

Art Homework #1:
Assigned: Friday, September 5.
Due: Wednesday, September 10.

Have your parent(s) signature on the bottom of your course syllabus.  Bring to class to show me.

Art Homework #2:
Assigned: Friday, September 5.
Due: Friday, September 12.

Bring art supplies (See course syllabus.)
Three most important items to have are:
art pencils, folder with pockets, & sketchbook.
(Everything else on the list is a 'bonus.'  If you don't have them, you will need to share or borrow in class.)

Assigned: Thursday, September 11.
Due: Wednesday, September 17.

Bring a photo of yourself.  Try to make it recent (within the last year so that it looks like you.)

Art Homework #4:
Assigned: Thursday, September 18.
Due: Wednesday, September 24.

Make an original creation using a food item.
Personify a fruit or vegetable.  
For examples: think of the slide show you saw in class this week.  That artist used apples, oranges, pears, watermelon, potatoes, tomatoes, cauliflower, bread.
Be creative.  Have fun.  The sky is the limit!

Create a rough draft for the PTA "Reflections" Art Contest.  
This year's theme is: "Wow!"

Due: Wednesday, October 8.

Complete the "Scholastic Art" Magazine assignment.
(5 different magazines from which to choose.)
Page 1 = your written info.
Answer 5 Ws: Who? What? Where? When? Why?
Page 2 = your artwork fully colored.

Assigned: Monday, October 6.
Due: Wednesday, October 8.

Enjoy discussing/sharing your creativity with your parents.

Create a drawing of a school scene.  
Choose to emphasize only one of the 6 Elements of Art:
(shape, line, form, color, texture, space.)
Words & definitions are in your sketchbooks.
You can also look up art vocabulary words on ArtLex.com

Assigned: Thursday, October 16.
Due: Wednesday, October 22.

8a. Create your final draft of your artwork for the PTA "Reflections" program. Theme is, "Wow!"
Use 12 x 18 paper.  
Must be fully colored.

8b. Return entry form signed by parent
(whether you are entering or not.)

Due: Wednesday, October 29.

Create a drawing of a school scene.  
(If you drew inside last time, then you will work outside this time.  
If you drew outside last time, then you will work inside this time.)

Do not use the same element you used last time.

- Peter Max (working with color)
- Amedeo Modigliani (working with shape)

Also: Explain how your artwork relates to the topic in the magazine.  
Page 2 = Your own artwork done in same style as topic of magazine.  
Must be fully colored.

Choose 1 Element of Art that you have not yet used for homework.  
Use a "T" chart to create a page about this Element.  
Left side is "found" examples; Right side is your own example.  
Be sure both sides (right/left) show that you understand that Element of Art.

The "ABCs" ART, BAND, & CHOIR Spring Edu-Tour 2009.
    The ESMS Fine Arts Dept Spring Edu-Tour trip to Las Vegas, NV will take place on May 1 - 3, 2009.
    Very important informational parent mtg scheduled for Monday, December 1st, 2008 at 6pm in Bulldog Hall at ESMS.
    Be sure to attend this mtg on 12/1/08 to receive all the important registration paperwork
    & to reserve your spot on this fabulous trip of a life time!
