COMPUTER/YEARBOOK CLASS HOMEWORK (periods 3, 5) Updated 5/1/2009
SWINE FLU UPDATE
If you have any questions, here is a link from the CDC for parents. Keep washing those hands, covering mouths when you cough/sneeze, and stay hydrated.
Some words from our Principal...
Because I have received a number of e-mails with concerns
around the Swine Flu, I wanted to send a brief e-mail as to what the district
and our school are doing for preventative measures and what you can do as a
parent.
First, if there is any school closure related to the
Swine Flu, you will be notified by an emergency call and e-mail with details
related to the closure.
Second, all teachers have been asked to inform students
about the Swine Flu and assist in providing them more information related to
the virus. We also want to quell any fears they may have with regard to it
being on campus. Once that rumor gets started, we know that in middle school it
spreads within minutes,if not seconds. There will also be signs posted on every
bathroom door reminding students to wash their hands frequently and for at
least 20 seconds along with covering their mouths when coughing, etc. We will
make sure that all soap dispensers have plenty of soap at all times.
We will also be distributing sanitizing supplies to
teachers so that they may keep desks, door knobs, computers and anything else
germ free. If you feel you need to send your student with his/her own personal
sanitizer, please feel free to do so. We will provide some in the classroom as
well.
Lastly, if your child is sick for any reason, (fatigued,
cough, temperature, etc) please keep him/her home until the illness has passed.
This would also go for any public/sporting event.
I hope this provides you with enough information and I
will continue to keep you abreast of any details I receive until we hear from
the county that we are in the clear.
Thank you and have a good rest of your week.
Sincerely,
Renee DeVore
Principal

Your grades have dropped substantially due to missing assignments. The deadline has been EXTENDED -- get that last bit of work done! Grades have been updated.
FEBRUARY 2-6
We are pitching new movie ideas based on adapting a fairy tale, nursery rhyme, fable or young adult novel after watching the movie "Hoodwinked" for inspiration.
Students will be completing their "pitch" ideas on Moodle then will have time to practice them for the pitch presentations on Thursday/Friday.
Directors who get their projects "greenlighted" will need to complete scripts and storyboards this week. We will also choose production teams.
We will also be working on yearbook assignments - at least six pages from class will be due uploaded to a specific site every week in preparation for our upcoming deadline.
EDITORS will learn how to use Photoshop to check for specs and how to upload the elements to the yearbook program for placement on the final pages.
JANUARY 12-16th
We have been working on essays about our Dream Cities. IN order to get full credit for the "Revisions to the Essay " Grade. Students were asked to submit a rough draft and then two revisions before the final draft. Students who have been working in class and have shown work on the essay will receive full credit. Those who have not been working and/or submitted all revisions on Thursday before the final on Friday will receive fewer points.
We will be starting a new unit and recently moved to new seats. This trimester we will be doing more individual work and that will be more objectively graded. Additional focal points include spreadsheets, podcasts, and sharpening our formatting, research and debating skills.
JANUARY 5-9
Essay Assigned on Monday, Dec. 5th - Dream City on myaccess.com. Students must submit four times including a rough draft and two revisions before Jan. 16th. We reviewed some of the tools that you can use to help improve your writing and students got to see what the teacher can see from their log in.
City work will be presented starting Wednesday and ending on Friday. Final teams will be assembled and readied for the competition coming soon.
DECEMBER 8-12th
Students are delving deeper into their group projects that they have selected for the Future City Competition. The goal for this week is to:
have stable cities that are getting closer to the stated goals found in the packets handed out two weeks ago
have the scale for the model selected and the model mapped out with recycled parts collected and the base started
research completed and an outline done for the essay.
ALL teams will need to have a progress plan written in google and all individual team members will need to write a review of what they have learned to date.
The Goal ??? To have all the cities, models and essays ready to go before we leave for break!
DECEMBER 1-5th - Sim City Competition Week
We are learning to share documents using google docs from our class website, completing some vocabulary assignments to show off the computer/organization skills learned during the trimester, and will be diving into the software, model and essay writing starting Wednesday.
The assignments for the week include:
three vocabulary assignments using T1 vocabulary words (due tuesday, 12/2 - assigned week before Thanksgiving Break)
COMMMUNITY SCAVENGER HUNT - completed by the city team (due Wed, Dec. 3 and assigned Mon., Dec. 1)
ABSTRACT - one per team after you have decided what your city is going to be all about (due Dec. 5th - assigned Dec. 3)
ELECTION WEEK -Excellent work on the discussion boards-- only a few folks needed some reminding about the rules-- very impressed with your maturity in discussing some very major issues.
Let the final edits begin! All videos are due Friday on the server. We will be rapidly burning to get ready for the contest. If working at home, be sure to have your completed project on disk in your envelop for Friday's reveal!
For those stressing -- you will have a little time on Thursday to work, but not much and then very little time on Friday. We have to stop at least half-way through to get all the movies on the server so that we can burn the disks for the contest entries.
Remember, it's about the process so if you don't meet the deadline, you will have a chance to get some credit as long as you can tell me what you learned from the process.
VIDEO PRODUCTION - We are into the filming and editing stages of our movie production unit. Scripts and storyboards are being finalized this weekend and all materials will be ready for editing by mid week.
Students who have the equipment to capture and edit video must remember to export as a file, not as a DVD. For Macs, that is export to QT or Quicktime and for windows users, export to CD or regular Windows Movie Format. You CANNOT export to DVD - this is against the rules of the contest.
For those who are working at home, you will be asked to do work in class on assignments to show that you can use the equipment that we have here. Throughout the year, students will be assigned video projects for staff and for district-wide requests as well as for the yearbook dedication video. One group is already working on a project with the school counselor.
Just a reminder -- what we are doing in class is listed at:
You can click on the link to see what we are working on throughout the week. If you are absent, it's the best place to start. Also on the THIS WEEK IN COMPUTERS page is a link to "Listen to our Voices".
This is a podcast that will be updated weekly by Ms. Maye to talk about what is going on in class. Later in the year, look for a link to student developed podcasts that will change each week.
Also, if you would like to be notified each time a change is made to schoolnotes, click on the NOTIFY me button and enter in your name and email address. Everytime schoolnotes is updated, it will send you a note with a direct link to this page, sort of like a listserv.
PLEASE DON'T PANIC!!!! About grades. Students have had two or three "catch-up" days that have not been productive. SOOOO anything not turned in has been marked as a ZERO for incentive purposes. Monday, Oct. 6 will be used to get EVERYONE caught up and uploaded.
In general, items from absences should be made up by Friday that the child returns from the absence. We have been using most of our class time for learning new things, hence the ALL CALL on Monday.
If there are any slow typists or folks who are behind in more than one assignment, they may want to work on some at home to complete them and upload to moodle from home.

Welcome to Class, Detectives!
Today, you are going to do some detective work (and shhh.. the person sitting next to you may be listening and watching your screen). Actually, each detective will have his or her own assignment, so it won’t really matter, but here we go….
The Instructions (physical labor)
Open a New Word Processing Document
Put a heading on the paper.
Save as “HUNT_your topic”. For instance, if I was in period 2 and the topic I was given at the door was “Ancient Africa”, I would save as P2.HUNT_Africa.Maye
OPEN AN INTERNET BROWSWER… we hope they are playing nice today due to all the hard work from my period 2 terrific tech team
What You’re Doing (mental work)
You are SEARCHING on the internet for information that will help teach someone about the topic you have been given. You need to find a variety of sources that help explain the topic, show examples of the topic, and to make the topic come to life. Keep in mind that some people prefer to READ, some prefer to SEE (visual/pictures), and some like to see and imagine what it would FEEL like to be there. You need to include sources that use all of the senses so that everyone will be able to read the information and use the information to make sense of the topic.
What TO Do….
SEARCH for your topic using a variety of search engines. Skim and read a bit of the information.
When you find a webpage that would be helpful if you were doing a report, copy and paste the URL into the Word Processing document.
Be sure to write a short description so that other students will know what to expect when they click on the link.
Continue until you have at least 10 links with descriptions and hotlinks (items that someone can click on and go directly to the web).
TECHNICAL ITEMS>>>>>
Save as indicated.
Open BlackBoard.com and log in.
Click on Bulldog Computer Applications
Click on TOOLS
Enter a title (Hunt and your topic).
Click on BROWSE and find the “Hunt_topic” thatyou just saved. Click on SUBMIT.

You will now have a SEND option. Click on SEND FILE
Type in a Title (HUNT_your topic). Find the file that you uploaded to your BlackBoard account.
Enter a comment “From Last Name, First Name and the Period”.
Click on Submit. Your Link list will be sent to the instructor.
You ARE done! If you want some extra challenge, download the EXTRA CREDIT file from Blackboard and see how many questions you can answer in a word processing document. The instructions are explained in the comments section…
WHEW!! I know you can do it - just follow the steps one by one... The most important part for today is to FIND THE SITES. If you run out of time, we can do the sending and uploading to Blackboard.com tomorrow, but try it yourself.. YOU CAN DO IT!!!! Show what you know, take a chance...
If the net is down, will have an alternative lesson for you...listed here....
Create a list in MS WORD. FInd one item for each letter of the alphabet for the topic of computers, for instance "M" might stand for MOUSE. Include a description and if the internet is working, add a link for each item for a term.Save as "A to Z"
Write a poem about giving thanks. Illustrate in APPLEWORKS drawiing. Save as "THANKS"
