•  Star of the Week Nameplate: Our Star this week is Allen. Please remind your child to complete the tally marks section of the homework and make a lovely nameplate as well.

•  Baby Picture: If you have not sent in a baby picture (3months-1 year old) of your child, please send one in ASAP. This photo will become part of your child’s Kindergarten Memory Book. If it’s difficult to find a baby pic, toddler- age will be fine.

•  Monthly Art Project: This month’s flower shape was sent home last week. Please return ASAP.

•  Sharing: This week’s theme is free choice.

CONCEPT CORNER:

Science: The kids have been so excited to watch our 5 Monarch butterfly (black with orange and white spots on wings) larva eat and eat and eat, and then turn themselves into chrysalides. These cocoons had been suspended inside the special packing cup and were recently placed inside our butterfly garden insect cage. I am proud to announce that the first of our butterflies hatched on Thursday evening and is doing well. Perhaps by the time your read this message, the rest have also been born. The butterflies will need time to gather strength and will remain inside the garden cage for about a week, resting, flying and drinking flower nectar and sugar water. We will plan a special trip to Library Park to release the butterflies some time soon.

We’ll also be planting seeds in soil and also in an unusual way…in plastic bags to be attached to our windows. The kids will observe them daily, make hypotheses about what changes will occur and draw conclusions from our study of how plants grow as we continue to discuss another cycle of life found in nature.

Language Arts: In trying to get ready for first grade, we’ve been practicing using capital and lowercase letters and writing more than one sentence in our journal writings. Our new basal reader is entitled The Monkey. We’ve almost come to the end of our adventures with characters Ben and Peg and the kids have grown to appreciate them and their stories. I have sent home new sight word cards that include new ones we will be learning. Use them for practice at home.

Math: We’ll continue with many activities involving number sense, shapes, and simple equations using the (+) and (-) signs. The children will compare numbers, telling which is larger and smaller. We’re revisiting measurement as we monitor the progress of a plant’s growth as well as looking at volume and using non-standard weights.

Have a lovely week, Maria O’Brien
