MUSICAL NOTES FOR MAY!!
___________ FIRST AND SECOND GRADE ________________
First grade has been enjoying music lessons integrated with ideas from our great spring season. Students used the story of Peter Rabbit to learn about gardens and veggies, and then got to sing some veggie solos, duets, and trios in a musical garden around the room. Ask your student what kind of veggie he or she got turned into for the day!
Coming up......students will be reviewing skip counting and money amounts through the help of some singing and listening games. Also, first graders will be reviewing note names and simple rhythm and pitch patterns through our musical bouquet lesson. Each student will be given a flower with a rhythm on it that they must listen for, recognize, and play back to the teacher. As these rhythms are practiced the flowers go into an empty vase, and when every student has finished, a class musical bouquet will have been created.
Second grade has expanded their knowledge of musical form. Students can now recognize and perform AB music, ABA music, and Rondo music (ABACA). Further exploration of Rondo form will happen with the piece Fur Elise by Beethoven. This famous piece will be listened to, discussed, graphed by section, and performed through creative movement. Keep an eye out for the upcoming "Second Grade Music Informance" at your student's school. Dates and times can be found below as well. Family and friends are invited to attend these events to watch their proud second graders show off a bit of what they've learned this year. Hope to see you there!!

______________ FIFTH GRADE ________________
By now your 5th grade student has learned our entire states and regions song. This song begins in the NE region of our country and goes through all 5 regions in the U.S. from state to state, ultimately creating a mental map in each student's head. The song is energetic, fast paced and informative. Ask your student for a preview before he/she performs it for 5th Grade Promotion.
In honor of President's Day, 5th graders learned a President's Song. This song lists presidents in order from George Washington to George W. Bush with some great fun along the way. By the end of this song your student will be able to recite all 43 presidents (with the 44th on the way!)We are using this song to help reinforce social studies concepts as well as learn about ABA form in music. Ask your student to describe what ABA form means and how musical form is similar to the form they follow as student writers.
Promotion is on its way and that means its time for your fifth graders to start learning some 5th Grade Promotion music! Over the next few weeks your students will be introduced to some new pieces of different styles, forms, and themes. These pieces will be rehearsed, and in some cases, have movement added to them.

KEEP ON GROWIN'
Keep on growing

Keep on growing all year round,
See the sun in every day
Taking you away…………Okay!
Keep on growing
Reaching up to the sky

You gotta stretch your wings and learn to fly
You can go up oh, so high
Plant a seed and cultivate
You’ll see growing’s great . . . . . . . . . 6 – 7 – 8 - !
Keep on growing (repeated 8 times)

We keep on moving
And as we grow

Here’s to today
Through joy or sorrow
We’ll be okay, oh
We keep on dreaming
And as we do,
Here’s to tomorrow
Dreams do come true

Part 1: ….go. And on we go……. And on we go……….And on we go.
Part 2: Here’s to the future, here’s to the past. Here’s to the future, here’s to the past……. we go.

Get up, get up, get up.
Get up, get up, get up.
Get up, get up, get up.
Its time to move, its time to move!
(claps)
Don’t be sleepy,
Don’t be droopy,
Don’t be tired.
Time to find your energy and get inspired.
Time to wake up to the beat.
Time to move your dragging feet.
Let the music and the rhythm get you fired up!
Don’t be drowsy,
Don’t be lazy,
Don’t be boring.
Time to open up your eyes and quit your snoring.
Time to wake your sleepy head.
Time to get up out of bed.
When you hear that rhythm you will be adoring it! Oh!
Get up, get up, get up. (Don’t be snoozing!)
(Don’t be snoring!)
Get up, get up, get up. (Don’t be losing!)
(Don’t be boring!)
Get up, get up, get up.
Its time to move, its time to move!
