Parents,
First off, thank you to all the parents who attended Open House! It was such a pleasure to see the familiar faces and speak with you. The students of Room 3 have worked really hard all year long, and they seemed to be very proud (as they should!) of their accomplishments! Included in this week’s packets are a few things that need your attention. First off, the permission slip packet is VERY important. We still have 3 field trips left this year. The first will be on Friday, June 13th to the Roundhouse here in Manhattan Beach. The cost for the field trip is FREE, but please still read and sign the permission slip. The second field trip will be to the L.A. Zoo on Monday, June 16. Please note that we will be leaving Robinson at 8:15 and returning at 2:45 which is when the upper grades get out. The cost for the L.A. Zoo is $8.00. This includes your child’s ticket, and the bus fee. Please send cash only (no coins, checks). The final field trip will be with our first grade buddies. We will be walking down to the beach for the day on Tuesday, June 17. The cost is FREE, but please read the letter for your information. ALL PERMISSION SLIPS ARE DUE NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11!  Lastly, I have included a study guide for the Plant/Life Structures test. The test will be given either Wednesday or Thursday. Hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

May 19-23

NO HOMEWORK PACKET THIS WEEK DUE TO ENDANGERED ANIMAL PROJECTS! PLEASE FOLLOW THE TIMELINE AND FEEL FREE TO STOP BY ROOM 3 TO VIEW A SAMPLE MOBILE!
Dear Parents,
In lieu of a homework packet this week, the children will be working on their Endangered Animal Projects! We will be forging ahead with Saxon until we reach lesson 100. After that, Saxon will die down slowly. Only 3 more Saxon tests to go, hooray! I want to thank those parents who have stayed on top of this all year long. You have helped ensure that your child will be able to meet the demands of 4th grade. Speaking of 4th grade, can you believe your child only has 22 school days left? This year has flown by so incredibly fast!
In English/Language Arts, we have begun our final novel, Charlotte’s Web, by E.B. White. The students seem very interested in the story, and might I add how much EVERYONE has improved on their reading! They sound so sophisticated now, from voice expression, to speed and fluency, I cannot believe how far everyone has come! I am so proud of all my students!
In addition, our final unit of the year, “Life Structures” is already in full swing! Room 3 is about to become an abyss of living things, from plants, to animals…get ready for it all! I need all of the students in Room 3 to bring a 4” by 4” pot for planting ASAP. (Please make sure the pot has the little dish that goes with it to catch the water when we plant) I already have 7 students who brought them in, and I apologize for not getting this letter out to all of you last Friday, but I was sick and out of town. Some of the parents have been gracious enough to donate more than one pot which has been fantastic! If possible, I would like to get all the pots in by tomorrow or Wednesday. I apologize again for the rush.
Lastly, don’t forget that there is no school on Monday, May 26 due to Memorial Day. Also, library has been cancelled this week, so library volunteers…you get the day off! Hope you all are enjoying the sunshine at the beach!

April 14-18

Hello to all! I hope everyone had a relaxing Spring break, whether you traveled with your family or stayed locally. We have jumped right back into our curriculum and I need to inform all of you a few changes and important information that you will need to know for the next month. First off, you will notice that the homework packets for the next month will be a little extra thick. That is because the third grade team is sending home specific practice sheets for your child to complete to prepare him/her for the state testing which is coming up next month, from May 5-16.  Third graders have more testing than any other grade at Robinson. They have TWO weeks of it because they get tested on both the CAT and the STAR assessments. Parents PLEASE do NOT schedule any vacations or appointments during those two weeks. Making up these tests is extremely rigorous on the students. I do believe we will be on a minimum day schedule both weeks, so keep that in mind. With that said, you will be happy to know that I will not be assigning Saxon homework every single night, due to the fact that the homework packets are so large. I am asking that you really take the time to correct and go over the homework that deals with testing. I have put a * in the corner of the test practice sheets. If your child doesn’t understand the practice sheets, then they will not test great in that area. I will be going over many of the concepts tested in class, but I do not have the time to go over all of them, which is why it has been incorporated to the homework. I thank you in advance for helping your child a little extra over the next month. Last year, it was very obvious which students and families took the time to make this a priority, and it made all the difference!
___________________________________________________________________
Hello! First off, I want to thank all the parents who were able to make it to our “Famous American Museum”! The students had a wonderful time showing off all of their hard work! Now that the Famous American speeches are complete, we are back on track with the homework packets.
In reading, we have completed the novel, Lily and Miss Liberty, and we’ve have already begun George Washington’s Breakfast.  The students seem to be really enjoying these stories as they coincide with our social studies unit, Patriotism.
In social studies, the students have learned a great deal about the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, the American Flag, and the Great Seal! The students have completed a plethora of writing activities, and projects and have been very curious about our national symbols. In addition, Room 3 has had our very own debate (in fact, we’ve had two!). The students are leaning how to debate people’s opinions, and I have to say I’m extremely impressed with what I have seen. They have been patient and mature when listening to others speak, and sometimes I actually make them debate AGAINST their own opinion. Ask your child about the debates we’ve had in class about the Liberty Bell, and especially about the Great Seal. It should make for good conversation.
In math, we are continuing on with Saxon. Saxon usually becomes increasingly difficult right around this time of year. I will be letting the students “redo” their Saxon tests from this point on. In other words, if a child receives a grade he/she doesn’t like, then they have the option to “retake” the test the next day. If your child decides to retake a test, PLEASE help them study the problems that they missed! It is vital that your child master the concepts being taught. I understand the demands of Saxon, but bottom line is, they need to know it! Thank you for your help in advance with this!

Week of February 11-15

Hello everyone! I just wanted to touch base with you because there really isn’t a homework packet this week that will be due this coming Friday. The only homework that your child will be responsible for is their nightly Saxon homework, and their Famous American Speech project. Parents, please refer to the Famous American instructions (blue sheet) and the guidelines (white sheet) for your child’s project. The Famous American Projects will be due the week of March 3rd as the outline does NOT include the week we have off of school which is February 18-22. Please make note that everyone MUST bring in their poster boards on March 3rd, even if they are not presenting that day. The children will be selected at random as to when they will perform their speech that week. They will know the exact date of their presentation next week.
I also wanted to brief you on Valentines Day which falls on Thursday. The students are encouraged to bring Valentines for EACH student in Room 3, AND one for their first grade buddy. We will be exchanging Valentines within our own class as well as with Mrs. Yerke’s (buddy class). Parents, please do NOT send anything eatable attached to your child’s Valentine. There is a strict no food policy at Robinson. With that said, stickers or any non-food items are permitted. Have a wonderful week!

P.S. The class list of names for Valentines is listed below!

February 4-8

Well, what a week it has been! From the Robinson Spelling Bee, to experimenting with surface area, evaporation, and condensation, the students have been busy! I do want to take a moment and congratulate our Spelling Bee finalists: Ruby Hill, Ethan Hsieh, Riley McMahon, and our alternate, Trevor Todd! Snaps to all of your for your outstanding spelling accomplishments! Included in this weeks homework packet you will notice that there isn’t a homework packet turn in, nor will  there be spelling or journal. Instead, the primary focus will be on your child’s Famous American Speech and studying for the Water Test, which will be on Friday, February 8. Please note that the study guide included only covers the written part of the test. There are 3 sections of the water test, which include, written, pictorial assessment and oral explanation of water concepts. The study guide included only covers the written part of the test. The other 2 parts of the test are strictly based off experiments done in class. Lastly, although Robinson is going paperless starting this coming Tuesday, I want to inform you that I will still send home the Tuesday envelopes as a means of transporting your child’s school work/tests, etc. home. Thank you!

January 28-February 1

NO PARENT LETTER...BUT THERE IS A JOURNAL PROMPT THIS WEEK! PLEASE REMIND YOUR STUDENTS!
_____________________________________________________________________
January 21-25

Hello! As always I feel as if time is FLYING by…February will be here before you know it! In reading/Language Arts, we are forging ahead with Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Unlike some of our novels read in the past, we have been exploring challenging vocabulary words on a daily basis. Feel free to discuss with your child some of the new words they have been learning. Ask them what words they have learned from the book! I am sure you will be quite impressed! Overall, the students are being pushed a little beyond their comfort zones, but are truly benefiting from expanding their own vocabulary.

Saxon, Saxon, Saxon! I want to thank those parents who have been staying on top with the math homework. I know it’s a lot! Please be aware that Saxon will begin to become increasingly difficult towards the end of February. With that said, I need your continued support in the home with your child! Lets stay on top of this!
Our science unit is in full swing! We have been learning all about the states and properties of matter. Please have open discussion with your child about this. Ask your child what the three states of matter are, and what the atoms look in a solid, liquid, and gas. (Tell them to show you with their hands). Also, ask them why water is called H2O? See what your child knows! IF you would like further exploration/extension ideas, please visit my website:

www.schoolnotes.com/90266/misslemmerman.html

and click on my featured interactive links!

IN regards to the Famous American speeches, your child has selected their famous American, At this point, I simply encourage you to get a book on your child’s famous American and have them begin reading. In the near future, full directions and timelines for the project will be sent home. Please don’t worry about anything else at this point.

Last but not least, the Robinson Spelling Bee will be held on February 1, 2008. The elimination round which will be held in room 3, will be on Tuesday, January 29. I will send the top 3 students to the February 1st finals! Keep reviewing the words with your child!
____________________________________________________________________
1/14-1/18

Well, getting back into the swing of things was a slow and gradual process, but the students seem to be well adjusted as am I.

At the bottom of the homework page, you will see a note to your child telling them to begin thinking of whom they would like to research for their next big oral presentation. In February, we will begin our next social studies unit, which is patriotism. The students will have to choose a famous American (deceased) and write it in at the bottom of the homework sheet. Please talk with them about this decision and help guide them in their selection process. The famous American can be anyone from a sports figure to a president that has dedicated to American history in any  way!

We have begun reading our new novel, mr. popper’s penguins. This book entails some rather difficult vocabulary and we have begun exploring popular words from 1938! We have also begun our new science unit, which is properties of matter. The third grade team primarily focuses on water. We will be performing a plethora of “mini” experiments throughout the unit. The stundents are pretty enthused to become scientists. In addition, we will also be learning about penguins and will be completing a penguin report in computer lab!

Again, I hope everyone is doing well! Best wishes for a fabulous 2008!

December 10-14

THIS WEEK:
I want to start off this letter with a big THANK YOU to all the parents who attended their conference with me. It was a pleasure speaking with you about your child and what lies ahead. I am so fortunate to have such a wonderful class this year! So, thank you, thank you!

We have recently completed many things in Room 3, which include the novel, Buffalo Before Breakfast, Raven stories, Raven masks, totem poles, and totem pole speeches. They have also finished learning about the Kwakiutl tribe. Next week we will forge ahead with the Cheyenne and Navajo tribes. The students seem to be extremely enthused with the unit, way to go kids!

REMINDERS:
•    Please turn in your child’s Knott’s Berry farm permission  slip & $18
•    Native American Day Parent Volunteer Forms…get to me ASAP!
•    Holiday Treats for the Soldiers in Iraq; this will be the LAST week that I will be collecting stuff! A HUGE thank you to the families who have already donated: McMahon, Underwood, Caskey, Forbes, and Waller! Our men and women out there will really appreciate this!

MARK YOUR CALENDERS:
December 19-Native American Day
December 20-Knotts Berry Farm (students arrive back at school at 3:30)
December 22-January 6-Winter Break…Happy Holidays!

_____________________________________________________________________
December 3-7

**Please see the Knott’s Berry Farm & Native American packets as they are separate from the homework packet**

THIS WEEK:
I hope everyone is adjusting to the colder weather assuming it won’t become all of a sudden warm again! First and foremost I want to be very clear about Robinson’s schedule for next week, which is parent-teacher conference week.

December 3-7, Monday-Friday 8:15-12:40
(This means that there will NO lunch served on campus so please send a nice sized snack with your child each day)

In regards to your conferences, you should have received confirmation about your specific date and time. I am asking you to arrive 5 minutes early to ensure smooth transitions from conference to conference. We have completed the novel, Midnight on the Moon and have begun, Buffalo Before Breakfast, which coincides with our new social studies unit, Native Americans.  In Saxon, we have completed up to lesson #15, which means our second Saxon test will be on Monday, December 3. (Remember there will be a Saxon test every 5 lessons.)

HOLIDAY COLLECTIONS/DONATIONS:
Over the summer on my back from a trip I took over the summer, I was seated next to a sergeant on the airplane. We got to talking and he informed me that he was on his way home from Iraq. Now, this was in August and he told me that his visit home to Los Angeles was going to be a short 14-day visit and then he was going to be heading back. Well, he has written me and I have emailed him. The students in Room 3 have written letters and we would like to send the soldiers some “holiday treats” since they will be away from their families this holiday season. For the next 2 weeks, Room 3 will be collecting the following donations:
•    DVD’s (actions, comedy, TV series, etc.)
•    Dry Snacks (stuff that won’t spoil or melt)
•    Stockings, Santa hats, bells, etc. (anything holiday like)
Thanks in advance for your support, the troops need our generosity!

November 19-23 (Thanksgiving Recess)

Well, our multiplication unit has officially come to an end and our ice-cream social was a huge success! Thanks to Cathy Lanigan and all the parents who helped out!
You will notice in this week’s homework packet the only item being sent home is the Space study guide. I would like the student’s to focus on studying for their final end of the unit exam, which will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2007. With that said, I want to make very clear that your child will have NOTHING to turn in upon their arrival back after Thanksgiving break.
I have also attached your parent-teacher conference date and time. Please mark your calendars and make a note to arrive 5 minutes prior to your scheduled time. I did my best to give everyone their first or second choice!
Your child has taken their first Saxon math test. The test covered lessons 1-10, however from now on I will be giving the children tests after every 5 lessons. So there will be a test after lesson 15, 20, 25, 30, etc., because as we move through Saxon, I find that retaining 10 lessons of information can be a bit much.
I also want to thank my weekly parent volunteers! From my Tuesday envelope stuffers, to my homework checkers and my computer lab and library helpers, thank you, thank you for showing up every week! Also, a huge thanks to my parents who show up weekly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays! Room 3 would not run as smoothly without your help!
Lastly, my homework assignment for you is to have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Enjoy the time you have with your families, and eats lots of yummy turkey! I will definitely be missing your children!
______________________________________________________________________

November 13-16

THIS WEEK:
Ok parents, as our multiplication unit comes to an end, our ice-cream social is just around the corner, on Wednesday! If your child has a multiplication quiz to redo, please make that a priority to study. They need to know those math facts! Speaking of math, Saxon has hit Room 3 and I understand that there is a bit of confusion, so I will try to clarify. Each week your student takes home a homework packet on Friday, and it is due the following Friday. That has not changed. What has changed is the extra Saxon lessons throughout the week. In ADDITION to your child’s homework packet, they will have to complete 1 Saxon lesson per night. Your signature is required on the yellow sheet inside their math binder titled “Nightly Saxon Check”. Your signature indicates that you have checked EACH answer with the Answer Keys I provided. Hopefully, this clears up the homework situation. Thanks for all of your support parents!

Our space unit is coming to end soon! The students have been working very hard, and have been learning about the sun, earth, moon, and the inner planets! We will continue our studies and learn about the asteroid belt, the outer planets, comets and asteroids.

We are also in the middle of writing our first five-paragraph essay. The title of the essay is My 3 Favorite Things About Halloween. This is quite challenging for the students. We have constructed “paragraph hamburgers”, completed a detailed brainstorm, wrote detailed outlines and begun our first rough draft!

Lastly, please continue to use my website! I am continually posting website links for you to look at with your child. I’m sure you’ll be surprised with how much your child can teach you! Please be sure to enjoy your three-day weekend!

______________________________________________________________________
CORRECTION!!! THE FINAL MULTIPLICATION TEST WILL BE ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9TH...NOT THE 5TH!
______________________________________________________________________
November 5-9
THIS WEEK:
Whew! October has flown by, and I can hardly believe it’s already November! Robinson’s first trimester will be over before you know it! Our multiplication unit has come to an end. There final multiplication tests will be on Monday, November 5th. We have already begun our very first Saxon lessons. Please see the note at the bottom of your child’s homework packet. You will find that your nightly signature is required, showing that you have corrected their Saxon math homework. Your signature is required in your child’s math binder on the yellow sheet in the column labeled “parent signature”. PARENTS, this Saxon math program is VERY rigorous. If your child struggles in the field of math, I suggest you seek some help. I know of an excellent tutor, so if you are interested please let me know and I will send some information home with your child. Please see the detached Saxon Answer Key for lessons 4-30 so you can correct you child’s homework!

THIRD GRADE ICE CREAM SOCIAL
As the multiplication unit comes to an end, the entire third grade class is celebrating together in the third grade garden on Wednesday, November 14th @ 1:00. The students in my class have earned their way (some are still earning) to this social by passing each multiplication fact family. Please talk to your child to find out if they have passed all of their multiplication quizzes or if they have a certain number of “redos” to take. Wednesday, November 14 will be the LAST day to pass any/all of the timed tests so they can earn their “ticket” to the ice-cream social.

*PLEASE NOTE PARENTS* The redo's were NOT attached and sent home...they will be sent home on Monday, thank you!

October 29 – November 2
THIS WEEK:
Hello parents! I cannot believe how fast October has flown by! We have completed our second novel, The Boxcar Children-The Pizza Mystery. The students seemed to really enjoy the story, not to mention the delicious pizza’s we made in Room 3…yummy! Trying to figure out who was trying to shut down Piccolos Pizzeria was super fun! Currently we have begun our next novel, Midnight on the Moon. This novel goes directly with our science unit, Space. Room 3 also got a new student, Miss Brittney Paige! The students have been wonderful to her and we are delighted she has joined the Robinson family!
Halloween in Room 3
I am trying to keep Room 3’s Halloween activities a “hush, hush” to the students, so please help me keep it a secret. However I am in need of some parent donations and parent volunteers (Mrs. Lanigan will be sending an email about this). I will need 5 medium sized pumpkins for Wednesday, October 31 (1 per table group) because we are going to be spending the day learning about pumpkins. The students will be guessing how many seeds are in a pumpkin, if it floats, how many lines are on it, etc. After the class completes their predictions, we will be carving into the pumpkins to count the seeds and then we will be baking them for a delicious snack later on. With that said, I am in need of the following:
* 5 medium sized pumpkins (I will need to know the cost per pound as they will be guessing this as well)
* 2 big plastic bins to test if the pumpkins float
* About 2 dozen apples
* 2 -3 toaster ovens
* 4-5 volunteers all day (remember it’s a short day 8:15-1:20)
Multiplication Math Tests
If your child has 2 or more “REDO’s”, meaning they have not passed 2 or more of the multiplication tests, they have been attached to this packet.  YOUR SIGNATURE IS REQUIRED ON EACH TEST & NEEDS TO BE RETURNED TO ME. Please study those fact families with your child. They need to pass those quizzes!!!!

October 15-19

THIS WEEK: First and foremost, I would like to thank all of you who attended our 2nd Annual Poetry Recitation! The entire third grade class worked really hard, on both their poetry books AND their presentations, so thank you again! In addition, I would like to personally thank Cathy Lanigan and all of the other parents who help set up the refreshments afterwards. It was lovely. Our geography unit has officially ended with our unit test! We are now beginning our new science unit…SPACE! As we begin our new unit the students will also be choosing new seats within the classroom. I feel it is important that the students move around throughout the year and learn to work with different seat partners and table groups. In math, our multiplication unit continues on and all I can say is that it is extremely obvious who is studying their multiplication and who isn’t. Parents, please keep it up!! We will also be finishing up our second novel, The Boxcar Children-The Pizza Mystery this week. There will be a final test on the entire book shortly after we finish.

Room 3 Needs Your Donations!
During our SPACE unit, our science specialist will be coming to Room 3 to teach a lesson that involves telescopes. Please save your empty paper towel rolls for Room 3 and send them in with your child. The lesson is not until November 1st, but I wanted to give you some time to save up some rolls! We will need a class set of them. We are also in need of Kleenex, it seems like allergy season is in full swing, and Clorox and/or baby wipes. Thanks parents!
______________________________________________________________________
PARENTS! We will be participating in a special science experiment during our next science unit-Space. The experiment will focus around telescopes. I am asking that you save the middle of your paper towel rolls (the rounded cardboard piece) and send them to school with your child. We will need a class set by November 1st, thank you!!
______________________________________________________________________
THIS WEEK: October 8-12
Whew, September flew by and October is in full swing! I hope all of you received our Poetry Recitation invitations; the students are very excited to show off their fabulous poetry and artwork from the various regions of the United States. You will notice in this week’s homework packet, there are only a couple of worksheets to be completed. That is because I want most of their efforts geared toward their state speech project. Again, this project is not something that can be done in a few hours. Parents, they will need your help over the course of the next week. I explained to the students that in order to receive a “4”, they must go above and beyond what is expected. If your child completes the assignment, with the minimum requirements, they will receive a “3”. I would like to make this very clear, only those who exceed the minimum requirements will receive a “4”. Please note that your child can purchase a tri-fold poster for their visual aide (for state speech) at the student store for $5.00.
We have just begun working on our “Super x6’s”. Thus far, we have tested: x1, x2, x3, x4, and x5. The students must complete 36 problems in two minutes with no errors. If they miss 1 or more, then they must retake the test. It is very apparent who does not have their multiplication facts memorized, so please continue to study those flashcards with them!
Our second novel, titled The Boxcar Children-The Pizza Mystery is quite a dramatic change compared to Ramona Quimby, Age 8. This book is a mystery and the students are having a good time getting to know Mr. Irons and the rest of the characters in the story!
LOOKING AHEAD
On Friday, October 12, our social studies unit will come to an end with the unit test. I have enclosed a study guide for your child to study from. If they know the study guide, they will be ready for the test. All of the third grade classes will be given the same test on this day. Please encourage your child to study the study guide thoroughly.
It’s PIZZA Time! In lieu of our current novel, The Boxcar Children-The Pizza Mystery we will be making healthy pizzas on Friday October 10th at 10:00am in Room 3. I will need the following items donated: whole-wheat English muffins, marinara sauce, mozzarella, pepperonis, olives, and mushrooms. In addition, I will need a couple of toaster ovens and some parent volunteers. I will have my room parent contact those who are interested.

THIS WEEK-October 1-5
Well, our Bean Maps are complete! We had a great time creating our regional bean maps in Room 3…not to mention the significant mess that we created as well! Whew! Please feel free to stop by Room 3 to check out your child’s bean map. They are really wonderful! The students have been working hard to master those times tables. Almost everyone has passed the “x2” & “x3” multiplication families. Currently, we are learning our 4’s and 5’s. Parents, please continue to practice with flashcards with your child, it makes all the difference! We have begun our second novel, The Boxcar Children-The Pizza Mystery. The students seemed to enjoy our different methods of reading, which is fantastic!

LOOKING AHEAD
STATE SHARING PROJECT-Enclosed in a separate packet this week, you will find the instructions to your child’s State Sharing Project. The students have selected their state that they will be researching. Please, please, please read over all the instructions, timeline, and rubric with your child.

REMINDERS
Please note, the “Challenge Words” for your child’s spelling test can be found on the front cover of their homework packets AND on my website, listed under “Flashcards”.

BIG THANKS
Again, big thanks to my wonderful, wonderful parent volunteers, you are all fantastic, and I appreciate your support. Hopefully I will see many of you at the Traveling party tomorrow night! Say good-bye to September!

Your child has written a variety of poems such as Haiku, Cinquain, Acrostic, Tanka, Rhyming verse and Diamante!  All of these art techniques and poems directly tie in with our social studies unit, more specifically on the various regions of the United States (coast, rivers, mountains, prairies, woodlands, and desert). Wait until you see them! In math, we are working towards passing our x3 families. Parents, please help assist your child master these for the fare (quiz).

They loved the wonderful notes and letters you left them! I, myself enjoyed meeting so many of you! I think this 2007-2008 school year is going to be a great one! In regards to Parent Volunteers, I will be contacting all the parents and their assigned positions shortly and the official list will be displayed on Monday, September 24 on my Room 3 bulletin board just outside the room. Again, thank you to everyone for attending, I look forward to seeing much more of each and every one of you!

THIS WEEK:
Well, your students are soaring in all areas of study! I am still assessing each student to determine his or her individual needs. I want to thank all the parents who have remembered to send in your child’s 12 x 16 foam board. Remember, EACH child will need one foam board to complete the bean maps. Additionally, I would like to thank those parents who have so generously donated blue aquarium rocks and beans galore! Thank you, thank you! I will still be collecting donations next week, but please parents get those foam boards in!

Reading/Language Arts:
We are about half way through Ramona Quimby, Age 8. Thus far, the students have completed a variety of comprehension and writing activities that coincide with our novel. For example, the students have completed Venn-diagrams, t-charts, created a restaurant review, and have completed other language arts exercises that target compound words, word grouping, comprehension etc. Students have their own “Ramona Workbook” that he/she will take home after we complete the book. Please note, that this week, the first spelling list is enclosed. You child may refer to my website for digital flashcards!

In addition we have also been working on compound words, word syllabication, synonyms, base words and endings.
MATH:
We have begun our multiplication unit and have practiced some of the basic multiplication techniques such as grouping. We have worked on this through the use of “Circles & Stars” (a project completed in class). We have also been learning about the commutative property as it relates to multiplication and completed a mini project, “Candy Box Research” to exercise this property.

The students have completed postcards from a specific landmark and they look fantastic! Come stop by and take a gander at your child’s work…and their very own driver’s license as we “take off” around the country.
LOOKING AHEAD:
In language arts, we will continue reading Ramona Quimby, Age 8. Students will be writing responsively to show comprehension. In math, we will continue with multiplication working on the x0’s. x1’s, x2’s and the x5’s. I will also be implementing some “call and response” like activities to help the students memorize their multiplication facts. Since maps are a big part of our U.S. Geography unit, we will be creating treasure maps and bean maps. Both projects will give students real “hands-on” experience creating and educating them in the field of mapping and compass direction.

Week of September 4-7
THIS WEEK
Hello Parents! I hope that you have had a smooth transition back into school! On Fridays, your child will receive a “homework packet” which will include their homework for the week, the spelling words, and my Weekly Lemmerman Letter. The homework packets will always be due on the following Friday. Please note that the homework packets are the exact same for all third grade classes, however my Weekly Lemmerman Letter is just for the parents of my students to read. The Weekly Lemmerman Letter will include information about what your child is doing in class and any additional reminders or important information that I need to communicate with you. If you misplace the Weekly Lemmerman Letter, you can go to my website: www.schoolnotes/90266/misslemmerman.html I will be updating this website on a weekly basis, so I encourage you to become familiar with it!
In order for you student to receive full credit for their homework you and your child must sign off on each line, where it indicates a signature required. Please note, your child will NOT receive credit for their homework packet if:
•    Signatures are missing
•    Homework is incomplete
•    It is turned in late
Please be on the look out for story references. Occasionally, your child will have to reference to the yellow and orange literacy books that your child took home with them on Wednesday. Those books are to stay at home and are to be brought back on the last day of school. The books are numbered 1 & 2 and there will be stories your child will have to read in order to complete certain homework assignments.
Lastly, you will notice that every night, your child will be required to read for 15 minutes. The third grade team calls this “Riptide Reading”. Your signature indicates that they have read for at least 15 minutes. Riptide Reading is very important for your child’s reading development. Although we will be reading novels everyday in class, your child will really benefit from the extra reading in the home!
History
Our U.S. Geography unit is the first social studies unit in third grade! The students have made driver’s licenses as we are “taking off on the ultimate U.S.A. road trip”.
Math
Our first math unit is multiplication, which will begin on Tuesday. We will start with grouping and using other manipulatives to practice this. The students will experience this on the individual, small group and whole class level.
Reading/Language Arts:
We have begun reading our first book, Ramona Quimby, Age 8. The students are learning about the publisher, title, date published, author, etc.
Looking Ahead/Reminders
•    Multiplication will last for 6 weeks, and it is imperative that your child masters the facts as well as understands the concept of grouping. Please work with your child as you see more multiplication facts in their homework as the weeks continue on.
•    We will also be working on comprehension, various brainstorming methods, using literacy graphic organizers, etc. to further their understanding of Ramona Quimby, Age 8.
•    I encourage you to sign up for the “HIGHLIGHTS” magazine subscription! (see yellow sheet)
**If you have NOT sent in your blue Parent Information Sheet, please, please, please get those in sooner than later, thanks!
