SchoolNotes.com - Linking Educators to the Community
Dear Parents,
This is the January/February newsletter.  Please read the highlights of each academic area below.

Language Arts:  We have started our reading theme of Imagination. Ask your child to tell you about the current story that they are reading. Some of the skills we are covering include:  making inferences, author's purpose, classifying and categorizing, compare and contrast, and author's point of view.

Please encourage your child to continue to read books and take Reading Counts tests. The computer lab is available for third grade students on Monday and Tuesday, during their 1:00 recess time to take Reading Counts quizzes. The students are working towards earning at least 25 points by the end of the second trimester.

Current event presentations begin this month.  Please check your child's monthly calendar for their presentation date. The summary/presentation should be detailed (at least 10 sentences.) This assignment is part of their oral speaking grade.  It will benefit them to rehearse their current event at home prior to their class presentation.

Math:  Students must be on multiplication timed test (x8) by the end of February to be considered at grade level.  It is important that your child practices and memorizes the basic facts. Your child should be able to tell you what they are currently working on in their math class .

Social Studies:  We are working on completing the geography unit.  Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to make the dough for the maps. Our geography landform test will be on January 27. The students should be studying their vocabulary and related pages in the social studies section of their binder. To commemorate Black History month in February, the students will be doing research on famous African Americans who made contributions to the history of the United States. Next, we will be studying local, state, and national government.

Science:  The students are currently learning about the Sun, Moon, and Earth.

Reminders:  We will be celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on January 19, and Presidents' holidays February 13-16.
