Newsletter for April,May,and June:

Dear Parents and Students of Room 9,

This will be our last website letter for April, May, and June. We are finishing up Theme 6 in Houghton Mifflin. The last two selections are called Moses Goes to a Concert by Isaac Millman and The School Mural by Sarah Vazquez.

Our Narrative writing sample will be during the 4th quarter.
Your writing will be scored on how well you:
* group ideas together and stay on the topic.
* tell about the characters and setting in your story.
*use details objects and events.
* make sure your writing makes sense and is in a good sequence or order.
* use correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization for second grade.

Your child should be practicing their cursive handwriting. We be starting after spring break. Our last spelling test will be on Friday, June 1st.

CONGRATULATIONS Room 9! Everyone did very well or improved on their Beyond the Basic Facts in addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Our next benchmark will cover addition, subtraction, and multiplication by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. During the month of April, we will be reviewing all the math standards for State Testing. I will be sending home some examples of released State testing questions in Language Arts and Math. Please take the time to look at the examples of the released test questions. Our testing window for Second grade will start on April 30th  - May 18th. It is important that your child goes to bed early, eats a good breakfast, and comes to school on time. If your child comes to school late, he or she will have to wait in the cafeteria until our test is completed for that day. We will continue to work on our Basic Facts and Challenge Math book. Our last Beyond the Basic Facts status check will be from May 25- June 1. We will be finishing up our last seven topics 5, 6, 7, 8, 15, 17, & 19. Some of the topics were covered for GLAS testing, but not all the lessons were completed. For example, topic 5 only has one more lesson(5.5) before we will take the topic test on geometry.

After Spring Break, we will continue to finish up our unit on insects and our literature study on Keep the Lights Burning, Abby by Peter and Connie Roop.. All insect reports and dioramas are due on Monday, May 21st. I will be videotaping their oral presentations for Open House. Open House will be on Tuesday, May 22nd from 6:30- 8:00 p.m. I hope you will invite your whole family. This is also an opportunity to visit other classrooms. There are amazing things going on at Manchester G.A.T.E. Thank you for touching my life. It is my honor to be your second grade teacher. As we continue our journey, I hope our paths will continue to cross each other.
Don't forget to "Dream It, Believe It, and Live It!"

Love,
Jill Nakamura
