Pupcorn Team Notes

Welcome to my homework page, 2K08-2K09!
As you can see, our team name is "Pupcorn".
Our team is composed of the students in Ms. Deutsch and Mr. Gever's classes.

Announcements:
*Science and social studies will be rotated every trimester on our team. This means 12 weeks of social studies or science to begin the year and then switch.
*The permanent Student Agenda has finally arrived and needs to be purchased NOW!

    Blocks 1 & 2: Math

We have begun using a math log to keep track of what the assignment is, when it was assigned, and how well it was understood. If you missed Back to School Night I have some information I can send home with your child.

Good News: We now have desk copies of the math book in the classroom so each student's copy can stay IN your home and OUT of the heavy backpack!

LOG 3--Integers
REPORT CARD STANDARD-- "Compares, orders, and solves problems involving positive and negative rational numbers"
T1,L3-a: Whole Number Sense; [10/06]Number Hunt I, pgs. 32-33 (all)
T1,L3-b: Integer Sense; [10/07]Number Hunt II, pgs. 34-35 (all)
---Note: this assignment is short but very difficult. As we learn about integers, students should continually return to this assignment to see if it is getting easier!----
T1,L3-c: Introduction to Integers; [10/07]P. 72; #'s 1-15 (all) & 16-42 (evens)
---Note: this assignment requires drawing 17 (count them) number lines
T1,L3-d: Adding Integers; [10/10]P.78; Problems TBA
---Note: We are making very elaborate and ornate number lines in class on card stock paper. I will laminate them over the weekend. Consequently, students will need to draw 0 number lines (count them: none) for assignment "d" listed above.

LOG 2--Exponents & Order of Operations
REPORT CARD STANDARD--"Applies order of operations to evaluate expressions"
T1,L2-a: Order of Operations; [9/24]Pgs.16-17; #'s 1-8 (all) & 9-42 (Mult. of 3's)
T1,L2-b: Order of Operations; [9/26] Worksheet Puzzle "H1-9" #'s 1-15
T1,L2-c: Exponents; [9/29] Practice for Lesson 1-2; #'s 1-26
T1,L2-d: Order of Operations; [9/30] Practice for Lesson 1-3; #'s 1-26
T1,L2-e: Exponents/Order of Operations; [10/01] EP2; #'s 7-25 (This is in the back of the textbook)
T1,L2-f: Order of Operations Enrichment; [10/02]Enrichment Challenge with three or four 2's.
This is an extra assignment for those done with all the other assignments. Students need to build an expression using only 2's simplifying to numbers from 0 to 30. Examples:
2 + 2 - 2 X 2 simplifies to 0
2 + (2 - 2) X 2 simplifies to 2
(2 + 2 - 2) X 2 simplifies to 4
2 + 2 X 2 simplifies to 6

Assignments "c", "d" and "e" were corrected on Friday, October 3rd. The Logs have been turned in and assessed by my parent helper. Students saw them on 10/08. I am keeping them in my classroom except by parent request.

Log 2 Quiz covering Exponents and Order of Operations was on Monday, October 6th. The following students scored above grade level:
BLOCK ONE: Joshua F. "4", Ray T. "4", Ruben A. "3.5", Derick A. "3.5", Michael G. "3.5", Billy M. "3.5", Miguel O. "3.5", Jenny Y. "3.5"
BLOCK TWO: Abby H. "4", Carol B. "3.5", Kyle C. "3.5", Jennifer G. "3.5", Levi T. "3.5", Michael V. "3.5"
ALSO NOTE: There were 18 more students (too many to list) who scored a "3", which means on grade level. That makes a total of 32 students scoring a "3" or higher on this quiz, about half of Team Pupcorn!
I would like the 3.5 and 4 quizzes returned for posting on the wall. The others can be filed in my classroom.
RETAKES: Students need to see me at lunch or after school to discuss re-takes.

LOG 1
The first assignment we recorded was "Getting Ready for Chapter 1"; [Sept. 10th],page 3 in the new math book. {This is T1,L1-a}
Next, {T1, L1-b} "Numbers and Patterns"; [Sept.11th], pages 8-9; try all problems up to #29
Last,{T1, L1-c} "Exponents"; [Sept.17th], pages 12-13; #'s 1-10 (all) & #'s 12-57 (multiples of 3).

Students turned the above work in on Friday, Sept. 19th along with the Math Log.  The work was assessed by a parent helper for organization and effort (showing work). ***************************************************
THE BIG NUMBER PROBLEM OF THE TRIMESTER is on display now!
