Summertime!
I hope that you are already settled into the relaxing schedule of summer. Things are getting cleaned up and out in the school, all in anticipation of a clean start in August.
I wanted to make sure that you have seen the reading assignments for the summer. I went over the paper on the last day before we said goodbye and handed each a copy. All grades have reading assignments for the summer,a way for us to keep fostering life-long learners.I will attach a copy of the paper below, in case it evaporated in the heat...
Enjoy- Mrs. Kelly
Reading Assignments
Dear Eighth Graders,
Well, here we are at the beginning of the summer vacation. I hope you have a wonderful time, with lots of free time and lots of activities. When you ARENT running around having fun, I have something for you to do- read!
Here are the requirements for the reading assignments:
Five books, reading level of 7th grade or higher. Remember to make it of an appropriate subject.
You may choose books that you would like to read, but one is ASSIGNED- The Misfits by James Howe
The Misfits will be discussed and tested when we return to school, so you might want to read this last, or read it twice!
One book must be non-fiction
For the other three books, there should be at least two genres, not all science fiction, adventure, etc.
Remember to use the reading logs!
Reports:
The Misfits- there will be a test and discussion upon return
Non- fiction- write a half-page news article about the event or person that you read about. Remember- who, what, when, where, why, and how.
One other- a summary of the book in Ύ page, typed. Remember to include title, author, genre, setting (where it takes place) and your reaction to the book.
One other- List the five to seven important characters in the book and describe each. This description should include some physical description, but it is important to give the reader a sense of what that character is like- personality, strong points, weak points, etc.
One other- An advertisement for the book- how would you sell the book? OR- a book cover for the book.
Take some time to choose good books- they will be easier to write about. These should be finished products- pen, neat, spelled correctly, heading. Typing is encouraged, but not required, except for the summary.
Happy Summer-
Mrs. Kelly
