The following is the note that was sent home with incoming 1st-4th graders for the summer. I encourage all students to participate.
Summer Reading Challenge
Who? YOU!!!
What? You can meet some really cool people and some interesting characters, improve your reading skills (which will help you in school next year) build your vocabulary (which will impress your families, friends and teachers) and enjoy some great stories.
When? Summer 2008!
Where? At home, on the beach, in the backyard, on vacation, in your bed with a flashlight, on a camping trip, snuggled with your parents, in a tree house, or anywhere YOU want to read.
Why? Books will take you to some amazing places. Good reading skills will help in school and throughout the rest of your life. You will get to read whatever books and stories your choose without it being an assignment from your teacher.
How? Keep track of all the books and pages you read during the summer on the attached Reading Log. Bring it back to school in August. You will be rewarded with a day (to be announced in the fall) to dress as one of your favorite characters and receive a special treat.
Don't forget to keep track of books and/or days read during the summer. There will be rewards in the fall for students who participate. Also don't forget about this great resource to practice math facts (as well as other math concepts) online during the summer:
If you click on the Math Minutes you can choose to be timed for one, two, or three minutes as well as the number of problems to solve. The students will be expected to know their math facts at the start of next year, so this is a wonderful way to keep skills polished.
Finally, I received a letter from one of my first graders telling me about the great time you were having at the lake, BUT.......you forgot to sign your name to it and there is no return address. I would love to write back to you if you let me know who you are. It was in a blue envelope.
Enjoy your summer! I'll see you in August.
