                ANNOUNCEMENTS AND SPECIAL INFO

* MISSION REPORTS AND PROJECTS, due February 12th- We have been working really hard in class on our written Mission Reports. All work will be done in class except for the typing of paragraphs which needs to be done at home. Students have been given directions for typing and due dates for the paragraphs. Mission Projects, which are EXTRA CREDIT, are due on February 12th. No late projects will be accepted. Please let me know if you have questions about the project. The students have learned A LOT about the individual missions they are studying. Be sure to ask them to tell you about life at a mission!

* FIELD TRIP TO MISSION SAN JUAN BAUTISTA, February 19th- We will be visiting the mission and town of San Juan Bautista to finish up our study of the California Missions. All 4th graders will be going on this trip and will need to arrive at school at 8 am on February 19th. We will return AFTER school, at about 3:30 pm. Permission slips have all been collected and parent chaperones will be notified this week. Thanks to all of you who were interested in coming. I wish I could take everyone!

* VOCABULARY WORKBOOKS- We are working on Unit 2 this week. Students will have homework each night and will have a quiz on Thursday. Please make sure your student is working hard to learn the words and do the best they can with the homework.

* PEARSON SUCCESS MATH WEBSITE- Our new math program has an online component that many of you may have heard about. The book, as well as lessons and activities are available online for student use. Today, the students were given a user name and password to access this website. (There is a link below.) I will occasionally assign online activities or quizzes.

* VOLUNTEERS- If you plan on being in the classroom for ANY reason this year, please make sure that you have turned in your volunteer clearance form to the office. You also need a copy of your driver's license and need to watch a short video that can be found on the district website. When you do come to volunteer, I will need to verify that you are cleared. Don't forget to check into the office when you are on campus.

* ASSESSMENTS HOME- Occasionally I will attach graded assessments to the Weekly Progress Report to send home. These are assessments that we have looked over in class and can be kept at home. I'll indicate that there are assessments to look at with a note on the Progress Report. Please review them with your child and let me know if you have any questions.

* ALPHA SMARTS AND KEYBOARDING HOMEWORK- We have started our weekly Alpha Smarts sessions to develop and practice keyboarding skills. Information about keyboarding homework will come home this week. Students will be required to complete one page of keyboarding practice per week. Please let me know if you have questions.

* MATH JOURNALS- In class, we have created and continually add to a math journal.  This has tools for problem solving, examples, and vocabulary.  Students are encouraged to take journals from school to home and back to help with homework questions.

* MULTIPLICATION TIMED TESTS- Every Thursday, we will be taking a timed Multiplication Test in class. Memorization of facts makes longer math problems much easier, so please help your child memorize facts up to 12. Some easy ways to practice are in the car out loud, with flash cards, on paper, or with games. Try the Harcourt Website below for online practice.

* PROGRESS REPORTS- Progress Reports will be sent home every Friday to inform you and your child of any missing work from the week. A sticker means all assignments have been turned in. Any missing assignments will be listed by week. Please make sure your student locates or completes any missing work by the following Monday. I am asking that you initial the Progress Report only after missing assignments have been turned in.

* READING LOGS- Students need to be sure to record any reading time on their reading logs. These logs are checked every other week and need to be brought to school every day.

* D.O.L. TESTS- D.O.L. (Daily Oral Language) tests will occur once or twice a month. Students will be required to study 10 sentences that we have worked with and corrected in class. They will be required to correct all mistakes in those 10 sentences on the test. If students receive a score of 8 out of 10 or better on three D.O.L. tests, they will no longer be required to take tests.

                    CURRICULUM UPDATE

* CURSIVE- The California 4th Grade Standards require that students learn to write in cursive. We have worked on learning all the letters, and students are doing more practice that they will use throughout the year.

* SPELLING- Each weekly spelling unit focuses on a group of sounds and challenge words. The challenge words are found in our Social Studies, Science, and Math curriculums.

* GRAMMAR- We are working on verbs.

* VOCABULARY- Each week, we will focus on one Unit which includes 12 new vocabulary words. The students will have activities afternoon to practice using the words.

* READING- Our second core novel is Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. It is a historical fiction book about an Indian woman who lived alone on one of the Channel Islands for many years. To go along with this book, our New York Reading strategies are focusing on digging deeper into a book, infering information, and character. Ask your student about the book!

*WRITING- We have written a fun creative narrative and we are working on both fiction and non-fiction summaries.

* MATH- We have recently worked perimeter, coordinate graphing, adding and subtracting fractions, area, estimating, measuring angles, circles, and problem solving. Coming up is comparing fractions, line graphs, mixed numbers, converting decimals and fractions, and adding and subtracting decimals.

* SOCIAL STUDIES- In Social Studies, we are studying the California Missions.

* SCIENCE- The students are finishing up learning about Electricity. Next we will move on to Magnetism.

* TECHNOLOGY- We are working on activities using Microsoft Word. We will also be learning how to make a PowerPoint about our missions. This will be presented in class as an oral report.
