                ANNOUNCEMENTS AND SPECIAL INFO

* HOW-TO ORAL REPORT, due Thursday 12/10- The students were assigned their first oral report yesterday. They will be teaching the class "how-to" do something. I've encouraged them to choose a topic that they are familiar with and that is not too involved. Please help your student look over the requirements and pick a topic. Topics are due to me by this Thursday, 11/19. We also looked at a calendar and planned some dates to have certain pieces of the report done by so that the students are managing their time wisely. Please let me know if you have any questions.

* VOCABULARY WORKBOOKS- We are working on Unit 2 this week. Students will have homework each night and will have a quiz on Thursday. Please make sure your student is working hard to learn the words and do the best they can with the homework.

* PEARSON SUCCESS MATH WEBSITE- Our new math program has an online component that many of you may have heard about. The book, as well as lessons and activities are available online for student use. Today, the students were given a user name and password to access this website. (There is a link below.) I will occasionally assign online activities or quizzes.

* VOLUNTEERS- If you plan on being in the classroom for ANY reason this year, please make sure that you have turned in your volunteer clearance form to the office. You also need a copy of your driver's license and need to watch a short video that can be found on the district website. When you do come to volunteer, I will need to verify that you are cleared. Don't forget to check into the office when you are on campus.

* ASSESSMENTS HOME- Occasionally I will attach graded assessments to the Weekly Progress Report to send home. These are assessments that we have looked over in class and can be kept at home. I'll indicate that there are assessments to look at with a note on the Progress Report. Please review them with your child and let me know if you have any questions.

* ALPHA SMARTS AND KEYBOARDING HOMEWORK- We have started our weekly Alpha Smarts sessions to develop and practice keyboarding skills. Information about keyboarding homework will come home this week. Students will be required to complete one page of keyboarding practice per week. Please let me know if you have questions.

* MATH JOURNALS- In class, we have created and continually add to a math journal.  This has tools for problem solving, examples, and vocabulary.  Students are encouraged to take journals from school to home and back to help with homework questions.

* MULTIPLICATION TIMED TESTS- Every Thursday, we will be taking a timed Multiplication Test in class. Memorization of facts makes longer math problems much easier, so please help your child memorize facts up to 12. Some easy ways to practice are in the car out loud, with flash cards, on paper, or with games. Try the Harcourt Website below for online practice.

* PROGRESS REPORTS- Progress Reports will be sent home every Friday to inform you and your child of any missing work from the week. A sticker means all assignments have been turned in. Any missing assignments will be listed by week. Please make sure your student locates or completes any missing work by the following Monday. I am asking that you initial the Progress Report only after missing assignments have been turned in.

* READING LOGS- Students need to be sure to record any reading time on their reading logs. These logs are checked every other week and need to be brought to school every day.

* D.O.L. TESTS- D.O.L. (Daily Oral Language) tests will occur once or twice a month. Students will be required to study 10 sentences that we have worked with and corrected in class. They will be required to correct all mistakes in those 10 sentences on the test. If students receive a score of 8 out of 10 or better on three D.O.L. tests, they will no longer be required to take tests.

                    CURRICULUM UPDATE

* CURSIVE- The California 4th Grade Standards require that students learn to write in cursive. We have worked on learning all the letters, and students are doing more practice that they will use throughout the year.

* SPELLING- Each weekly spelling unit focuses on a group of sounds and challenge words. The challenge words are found in our Social Studies, Science, and Math curriculums.

* GRAMMAR- We will begin grammar by studying sentences.

* VOCABULARY- Each week, we will focus on one Unit which includes 12 new vocabulary words. The students will have activities afternoon to practice using the words.

* READING- Our reading right now is focused on characters and understanding them as we work on reading strategies within our Reading Workshop. Our first core literature book, The Cricket in Times Square, which we are reading now, has some fabulous characters to study. Ask your student about the book!

*WRITING- We are focusing on narrative paragraphs, including legends.

* MATH- We have recently worked on double digit multiplication, algebra with parentheses, balancing equations, measurement, and lines. Coming up is shapes, more long division, unions and intersections, rounding, more multiplication, and place value.

* SOCIAL STUDIES- In Social Studies, we are studying Native Californians. Each student is helping with a group project that focuses on one tribe.

* SCIENCE- The students are learning about weathering and other slow changes on Earth.

* TECHNOLOGY- We completed a graphing activity using Microsoft Excel and will work on other projects with Microsoft Word and the Internet.
