When I have entered 0 in the maximum column (in "Aeries") for assignments, people have had the impression that a student has received a mark of zero.  Zero in the maximum column indicates extra credit work (maybe an oral review of a difficult assignment).  A student only gains (and loses nothing) in those situations, even if s/he raises his/her hand and answers incorrectly.
