Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Hey Raskob Community,

This year, an astounding 178,480 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the US. And the unfortunate fact is that one of them may be someone you know; a loved one, a colleague, a friend or even yourself.

I believe this is unacceptable and that’s why I’m doing everything I can to fight back.

In October, Raskob will be joining the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, and I want you to join me. All the money we raise will directly fund lifesaving research, access to mammograms, and free services that make the battle against breast cancer easier for patients and their families.  Last year we raised as a team $5,000!

This year the Bay Area has two walks:
October 18, 2008 -  San Francisco - Speedway Meadow at Golden Gate Park - it’s an easy 5 miles long.
October 25, 2008 - San Jose - Arena Green at HP Pavilion - its an easy 5K walk.

It will be a fun morning, and you will feel empowered to be part of a community of over 21,000 walkers dedicated to fighting breast cancer and celebrating survivorship.

I’ve already set up a team online. Click here to join me. Please make a donation if you can. Every dollar makes an impact, and together we can save lives.

Hope starts with us!

Very important reminder that today was the LAST DAY OF PIZZA LUNCH! Please send your students with lunch on Tuesdays until the end of the year. Thanks!

5/22/08

On Tuesday afternoon, a student's swim bag went missing. Please check to see if it was accidently taken to your house! It's a plastic target bag, with swimsuit and towel, but most importantly there was a very expensive set of ear plugs that the family is very distressed about losing. Please email Virginia (weatherby@hnu.edu) if you can help.

Pizza Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the New Student Lunch.  The RPA will provide pizza for the entire school. PLEASE do not send your child in with a bagged lunch.  Thanks!

WASC UPDATE!

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) granted Raskob Day School, grades 3-8, a six-year term of accreditation, expiring on June 30, 2014.

This 6-year term is the highest term granted by WASC. The WASC commission congratulated Raskob on the quality of instruction offered and noted the Visiting Committee’s report on the “stellar aspects of your school”.

This accomplishment was a group effort by the entire Raskob community.  We are proud of our school and look forward for more opportunities to excel in the Raskob C’s – Community, Communication and Competence for bright students with learning disabilities.

Copies of the Visiting Committee’s report are available for review in the front office.

Many thanks!

     Auction News!

Last weeks auction was a HUGE success.  We raised OVER $12,000 for Raskob!  Thank you to all the families and friends who attended and supported Raskob.  What a party!  Although our comedians only got chuckles from a few audience members, the band, rum cake, and live auctioneer made up for it!  Pictures from the Auction will be featured in the next Raskob Newsletter, due out at the end of May. If you have not already picked up your auction items, please do so.  If you have not paid for your auction items, you will be receiving a notice in the mail.

It is never too early to start planning next year’s auction.  If you have ideas on how to make next year even more successful, or maybe you had so much fun this year that you want to be apart of the planning process, give me a call!  Contact me, Jessica Baiocchi at 436-1278 or shoot me an email at Baiocchi@hnu.edu for information on how to join the auction committee for the 2008-2009 school year.

Raskob Testing Week

May 12-16 is Raskob’s annual standardized testing period.

All Raskob students will be tested using a norm-referenced academic test called the Basic Academic Skills Inventory (BASI). Elementary students will be tested in small staggered periods throughout the week and Middle school students will be formally tested from 12:45 pm – 3:00 pm on Tuesday, May 13th (reading comprehension and language) and Thursday, May 15th (math).  Students requiring extra time will have multiple opportunities to finish throughout the week.   Testing week is a great way for staff to assist students with test taking strategies and guidance.  7th and 8th graders will also have opportunities to practice with bubble sheets after they have completed their testing in booklets.

The comprehensive test is comprised of six timed subtests:

  • Vocabulary (10 minutes)

  • Spelling (10 minutes)

  • Language Mechanics (10 minutes)

  • Reading Comprehension (30 minutes)

  • Math Computation (20 minutes)

  • Math Application (35 minutes)

Total test administration time is just under two hours. The subtests will also be administered un-timed to yield criterion-referenced performance information in addition to standardized scores from the timed testing.

Raskob standard accommodations that do not impact standardization of scores include:

·        Small group administration

·        Marking answers in test booklet

·        Flexible administration of tests and test order

Additional accommodations include:

·        Extended time

·        Reading questions

·        Use of calculator

·        Breaks during testing

Please make sure your student brings healthy snacks and gets plenty of rest during testing week.  We purposely keep testing low key and keep schedule disruptions to a minimum during this week. If your child will be absent, please let us know for scheduling ease.

Testing will be scored in May and results will accompany June progress reports.  Please contact Raskob if you have any questions regarding testing.

Field Studies Week Information Sessions

Dear Parents,

Thank you to all the families that were able to make the morning information sessions regarding Field Studies Week.  I understand that not all families are able to make morning meetings, so I have scheduled an early evening info session, Thursday February 28th at 6:00 pm, with the hopes of accommodating those families who work.  This meeting will go over ALL grade levels field trips.  If you are still unable to make this meeting, please contact me to schedule a phone conversation so we can go over the packet of information specific to your child’s trips.

Thanks,

Field Studies Week is Almost Here!

Field Studies week is approaching quickly.  Raskob would like to invite ALL families to attend mandatory classroom meetings regarding field studies week.  At these informative meetings you will be given a detailed overview of the activities planned for your child the week of April 14th - 17th, have a chance to ask questions of the adults accompanying your children on the community excursions, as well as be given a list of equipment and supplies your child may need.  Below is a list of meeting dates and times; all meetings will be held in the California Room.

Check the lost and found! We will soon be making a run to the goodwill!

Dear Raskob Parents:

I am a Master's Candidate in Sociology at California State University and I am writing my Master's thesis on the relationship between schools and families of children with learning disabilities.  I am studying Berkeley Unified schools and Raskob to explore the ways in which the two systems differ in their approach to supporting children and families.  My research will be shared with both the public school district and with Raskob staff and leaders, but Raskob will not be mentioned by name.  I anticipate that my research will also be published in Sociology journals and presented at Sociology conferences.

I am also a parent of a child with learning disabilities and I am very sensitive to the experiences of families.  I follow strict confidentiality guidelines that have been developed by the Office of Research and Sponsored programs at California State University.  In addition, I will not publish any information that would make it possible to identify specific children.

My research approach consists of a semi-structured interview about your child.  I am not walking into my research with a specific hypothesis that I want to prove.  My objective is to look for themes that emerge from your experiences and your stories.  In my research to date, I have found that the voices of families are often lost  in academic literature. I am trying to fill in that gap.

If you would be willing to give me an hour of your time, I can arrange to do interviews at your home or office or a cafe of your choice.  I can also meet you at Raskob when you drop off or pick up your child.  Let me know what works in your schedule.  My time is fairly flexible.
