Welcome back to Raskob! It is my great delight to be teaching math, science, reading, writing and 8th grade homeroom for the first part of this school year.

General announcements - we are assessing student fit in classes both academically and socially this week. Homework is generally light. Students have participated in assemblies to get to know each other, staff and Raskob rules and procedures. It is hot this week so please make sure your students have appropriate clothing and water bottles.

Internet safety!
I again urge all parents to have discussions with their children about the use of social networking websites like myspace.com, facebook.com, gaiaonline.com, friendster.com and xanga.com. Many Raskob students have these accounts. Please contact me if you have any questions about how to access these websites.
Here are some helpful links:
Safekids.com - This is an excellent resource for parents and students.
CyberAngels - Fabulous resource!
FBI - The FBI guide to internet safety
Yahooligans! - interactive internet safety tips
We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions or concerns about internet use.
High School Prep - 8th grade homeroom
Please make sure you read through your summer mailings as they arrive at your homes. I encourage you to have a Raskob binder at home to keep your Raskob information organized.
All 7th graders and all new students MUST bring in updated immunization records on the or prior to the first day of school.
Please review the technology agreement carefully. NO CELL PHONES are allowed unless you have a medical or safety reason. Parents must submit a note to Raskob administration for a waiver. Students who bring cell phones without a waiver will be subject to disciplinary action outlined in the technology use policy and the student handbook.
Welcome to Mrs. Hallanger's information page
Writing (period 3)
This week we have writing assignments, goals and assessments. Students completed graphic organizers today about physical descriptions of themselves. We will construct our paragraphs tomorrow and share our paragraphs with each other Friday.
Reading (period 4)
- Wednesday homework - read African American folk tale (provided by Mrs. H.) and write a one paragraph response that ends the story and indicates the moral or lesson the folk tale intends to teach. (the moral or lesson would be a great "clincher" sentence)
- Thursday - Students must bring in their "Just Right" book for their book report/outside reading. Students have a handout that describes the qualities of a just right book. Ask to see it! We also went over the qualities in detail in class and took a tour of our new and improving Raskob library this week.
- We had a great discussion in class today about genre, folk tales and foreshadowing. Words like narcissism, dominant, arrogant and aggressive were used to describe character traits in our folk story! This is going to be a fun class!!!!
Science
We are studying physical science this year along with elements of life and earth science. This week we are:
- Completing knowledge charts and building background vocabulary.
- We went over the science syllabus - ask to see it!
- Ask your child to show you where the periodic table of element is located in their planner.
- We will also be familiarizing ourselves with the textbook and with the scientific method.
