Dear Sixth Graders:

Congratulations on a very successful year...You have all impressed me with your almost 100% participation in on time homework, your honesty, your sense of humor and the way you learned your grammar and vocab.  You will be getting a summer reading assignment from me so don't be surprised...We are gearing up for 7th grade and I am looking forward to spending the year with you.

a few of you have some work to make up but otherwise you are all good to go.

We will finish the year with some recapping and playing word games...you still haven't been able to stump me ;)

til then,
ms. c

Our Lady of Loretto 6th Grade Summer Reading Requirement

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”    Richard Steele

During the summer, students need to read 2 books. One book will be The Pigman by Paul Zindel.

Requirements for: The Pigman
1.    Students need to purchase a three-section notebook; this will be the same notebook that will be used throughout the year in 6th grade.
2.    Students need to get a copy of The Pigman by Paul Zindel
3.    The first section of the notebook needs to be labeled vocabulary.
4.    The second section of the notebook needs to be labeled grammar.
5.    In the literature section, students need to respond and reflect on the reading at the end of each chapter. This includes summarizing the chapter and reflecting on the meaning and theme of the story.
6.    In the vocabulary section, students need to create three columns. In the first column, write down the unfamiliar word, guess the meaning and write it down in the second column, then look it up and write a synonym for it in the third column.

The 2nd Book Requirement:

http://www.education-world.com/a_curr/curr244.shtml

Please respond to book #2 by writing a summary of the book in the following manner:

One page, typed, double spaced, 12 font, Times New Roman format in the following manner.  The book, (insert title here), by (insert author here), TELLS or DESCRIBES of EXPLAINS what?  (finish the thought)

Then give me three reasons why you can make that statement. Don’t tell me, “The reason is….”

Good reading!

Ms. C
