Our Lady of Loretto 8th Grade Summer Reading Requirement

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”  Richard Steele
During the summer students need to read 2 books. One MUST be from the World War II Reading list and the other is your choice. Please check out the ‘box’ below.

Requirements for World War II book:
1.    Students need to purchase a three-section notebook; this will be the same notebook that will be used throughout the year in 8th grade.
2.    Students need to get a copy of any World War II book (see list below or ask librarian)
3.    The first section of the notebook needs to be labeled vocabulary.
4.    The second section of the notebook needs to be labeled grammar.
5.    The third section of the notebook needs to be labeled literature.
6.    In the literature section, students need to respond and reflect on the reading at the end of each chapter. This includes summarizing the chapter and reflecting on the meaning and theme of the story.
7.    In the vocabulary section, students need to create three columns. In the first column, write down the unfamiliar word, guess the meaning and write it down in the second column, then look it up and write a synonym for it in the third column.

Please respond to book #2 by writing a TAG TED summary of the book in the following manner:
One page, typed, double spaced, 12 font, Times New Roman format in the following manner.  The book, (insert title here), by (insert author here), TELLS or DESCRIBES of EXPLAINS what? (finish the thought)

Then give me three reasons why you can make that statement. Don’t tell me, “The reason is….”
