ClassJump Language Arts; charts, wordlists, and stories that tie into standards
November,
What a great Halloween we had! Thanks to all the parents who shared the fun with us and supplied us with the usual overabundance of excellent food! Especially thanks to all those who helped take care of the leftovers and cleaning up the classroom. It all went very smoothly. Very special thanks to Mrs. Hernandez, who worked her customary scheduling and organizing magic so that everything went so well.
This week's spelling words: fun, run, cup, stuff, puff, jump, more, skip, swim.
We are reviewing our addition skills in Math this week, and beginning to study SUBTRACTION. Please go over the flashcards you have already made with your student, and emphasize the two subtraction elements of the fact families. Continue practicing working with coins. For some reason this is a bit tricky for first graders, and requires an enormous amount of repetition.
Alphabetizing is something we are continuing to work on. This week we'll put our spelling words in ABC order.
Please continue reviewing the sight word list with your child. We review sight words every day in class, and the more practice the better!
The reading at home is coming along nicely- we've read over TWENTY THOUSAND pages, if I remember correctly! Keep it up! Reading is the master skill, and I am more than happy to provide prizes and special activities for the class when they show such enthusiasm for reading. Have your child relate their favorite story to you, and help them to remember to share the setting, and to relate the beginning, middle, and end. ( this will help them with comprehension.
Ask your student to share what they have learned about Plants and their needs. Perhaps you might enjoy identifying the parts of plants that you eat during the week- see how many leaves, stems, and roots are part of your diet!
Do NOT expect homework packets to come home corrected this week, and perhaps next. I am keeping them at school to review with you when you come in for your Parent /Teacher conference in the near future.
Off we go on another fun week! Mr. S.
