      SCIENCE PROJECT

Project Criteria:

You will conduct your own experiment.

You will be graded in the following areas:

1. How much effort you put into the science of the project
2. How well you present your information (oral and written)
3. You may not kill/hurt animals or use dangerous devices/products.

4.Format: same as Normal Lab except for Background (except for Background Information)

5.Question:(using Manipulating and Responding Variable)

6.Background Paper: About 2 pages of related background information.

7.Hypothesis:

a. Prediction: (Must have one guess will be correct or incorrect)
If… (Manipulating Variable)
then…(Responding Variable)

b. Reason:

because…

8.Material:

(ALL MATERIAL USED, especially any material used to measure/weigh/time etc.)

9.Procedures:

a.  Must be logical: (Someone else can follow steps and get the same results.)
b.You know when the experiment starts and ends
c.You state what Material is used and what measurements are made.
d.You state, “Repeat…”  (key steps)
e.You state, “Record…” (data)

10.Data:

Must have both a Data table and a graph (from the table) showing the how the Responding Variable changes as you change the Manipulated Variable.

11.Conclusion:

a. Hypothesis correct/incorrect or answer the Question
b. Low Average data range (must use average numbers in Data Table)
c. High Average data range (must use average numbers in Data Table)
d. Show relationship between the Manipulated and Responding Variable (using low data range and high data range).

II.HOW TO EVALUATE THE PROGRESS REPORT

1. Test grades represent how a student performed relative to their class.  An individual’s grade is calculated by dividing the number of points she/he earned by the highest number of points earned by a fellow classmate. Hence, someone in the class will always have earned a grade of 100%.

2. Quizzes  are on the most recent material being presented in class. Quizzes are a good indication if the student is studying on a regular basis.  With an alternating schedule (every other day) it is very important that students review every night before coming to class.

3. Behavior and Effort are evaluated by observing the points earned during tutorial.  A student will earn 10 points per tutorial if they arrive on time and are quiet for the 45 minutes of tutorial.  A student will lose 5 points if they are tardy and 3 points for being noisy or disruptive.  Example – if a student is tardy and is too noisy, he/she will have 2 pts. out of 10 pts. for tutorial.

4. Book work (BW) is always due on the day of the test for full credit. The book work assignments consist of a list of vocabulary terms and a list of questions to be answered from the book.  At times they are checked for progressing in a timely manner and will receive an ink stamp to indicate they are working on their homework.

5. Worksheets (WS) are always due on the day of the test.  Worksheets are copied from a publisher workbook or other published work.

6. The 15 point score for the Notebook means the student has a notebook with dividers, syllabus, lab book and all reference materials present.

7. The Miscellaneous points column is for extra credit points.

8. All missing or late assignments since the last progress report should be stapled to the back of this progress report.

9.Symbols: mi - missing, ex – excused absence, unex – unexcused absence

III.BIOLOGY SYLLABUS

1.Prerequisite:

Passing grade in 9th grade Physical Science

2.Grading: Your grade will be determined by the total number of points accumulated from all assignments and assessments.  Points are given for the following:

Tests, quizzes, notebook, lab journal, lab reports, special assignments (readings, current events, field notes, etc.), research projects and attendance.

3. The school’s attendance policy will be enforced in this class.  You will be considered tardy if you are not sitting in your assigned seat and preparing for classroom activities at the time of the bell.  No late work will be accepted  due to an unexcused tardy or absence.   It will be your responsibility to obtain instructions for making up  late work due to an excused tardy or absence – BE PROACTIVE.  All missing assignments due to an excused absence must be turned in within three days following the absence. Missing assignments should be stapled to the back of the most current progress report.

Percentage points given for tests and  assignments are translated into a letter grade according to the following scale:

A  =  94 to 100%          C+ = 77%
A- =  90%                 C  = 74%
B+ =  87%                 C- = 70%
B  =  84%                 D+ = 67%
B- =  80%                 D  = 64%

A few comments about testing:

1. Tests will be announced 3 days prior to the test day.
2. If you are absent on the day of the test, you are responsible to make up the test outside of class time  (tutorial period or after school tutorial).
3. If you are absent on the test day or  the day preceding the test, you must make up the test on the first returning day to class.  You may also miss out on any  extra credit questions given on the day of the test.  If you were absent more than two days before the test, you will need to arrange a  make-up test day on the first day back from the absences.  If the above mentioned test make-up requirements are not met, then only with the instructors permission and an excused absence, you may make up the missing test with a grade not exceeding 64%.
4. If you areabsent on the day of a quiz, you may earn extra points by participating in extra credit assignments.
5. All students are strongly encouraged to attend test reviews after school on the day preceding the test and  at 7:00 AM on the day of the test.

4.Supplies:

a.  Paper, pencil, color pencils, and metric ruler.

b.  A 3-ring binder with the following five dividers:
