September 3, 2008...This is what we went over today in class.
To the parents of 2008-2009 math students:
I would like to take a few minutes to introduce you to the routine, reporting procedures,
expectations and the course objectives for our students.
McDougal Littell Math: Course 2 provides the foundation in algebra, geometry, and problem solving that is needed for success in more advanced courses. Built-in study and note taking strategies help students develop their learning skills. Challenging problem-solving practice, in context, and clear presentation of key concepts prepare students for
future courses. Note taking strategies, vocabulary review, and margin notes guide students to develop study skills and conceptual understanding. Practice with test-taking strategies and varied question formats, in print and integrated technology resources,
builds the confidence and problem-solving skills needed to achieve success.
Students may access their textbook on-line at classzone.com. Once you have selected the correct book you will find hints and homework help, more examples, animated math, practice, assessments and quick references.
Classroom Rules
I have five rules for our classroom that ensure a safe, productive, respectful environment. Each student is responsible for following the rules at all times.
1. Respect yourself, others, and property.
2. Be in class on time. You must be in your seat and ready to work when class begins.
3. Have materials ready in class. These include a three-ring binder with dividers, your textbook, two sharpened pencils with erasers (no mechanical pencils), wide-ruled notebook paper (no spiral), and an assignment calendar.
4. Follow directions the first time they are given.
5. Participate and learn.
Additional rules and procedures
1. No eating or drinking in the classroom or hallways unless your teacher gives you permission.
2. You can chew gum as long as it is not seen or heard.
3. Use a Number 2 pencil or mechanical pencils – no ink.
4. Stay in your seat except for appropriate tasks

Grading
Assignments will all have a due date. In the event of an absence, students will still be responsible for the work, and will be given one day to complete the work for every day absent. I generally allow time in class to finish all assignments in class. Assignments not completed in class, or specifically assigned as out-of-class work, should be completed at home. Review and practice for a test should require at-home study.
You may check your child’s grades and upcoming assignments on-line starting from day one through Skyward Family Access. You will be updated on how to access this site in mid-September.
Report cards are issued approximately every 9-1/2 weeks. Mid-quarter reports are also issued. This is a total of eight reports, which should keep you apprised of your child’s progress through the year.
All students should be filling out an accurate weekly assignment calendar. These calendars will be passed out to the students the first day of class. Parents should refer to the assignment calendar to verify work in progress and work completed. You should expect to see the assignment calendars, along with the corresponding work in progress or completed/corrected assignments, in your child’s three-ring binder.
Here is the grading scale for this class:
100% A+
99% - 93% A
92% - 90 % A-
89% - 87% B+
86% - 83% B
82% - 80% B-
79% - 77% C+
76% - 73% C
72% - 70% C
66% - 63% D
62% - 60% D-
59% - 0% F
Your will be grades on a combination of the following:
1.Daily Work
2.Homework
3.Quizzes
4.Tests
Students may retake tests and quizzes if they want to improve their scores. Students who earn less than 70% should take advantage of this privilege. Test and quiz retakes must take place within a two week period following the return of the graded paper.
Make-Ups
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up what you missed. First check the assignment calendar on the board to see what you missed. You may also go on-line to the Steven’s website and access our websites to find a posting of what we did in class. One day of make-up time is given for every day of absence.
7th Grade Policy on Late Work
Assignments that are turned in late will automatically be docked 10% for each day late. Please be careful to record due dates and stick to the turn in time.
