November 28

Dr. Rice just sent the following note regarding items left at the Bear.  If any of these items belong to you, please email me immediately.  Please also look at the note below this one; and remember that hoodies need to be ordered Monday morning, as I will be ordering them on Monday during third period.  - Smithy

I’m sorry to be so tardy getting this info out but I thought that surely some people would have at least e-mailed to inquire by now.  Among the more valuable items left behind at the Bear Brawl were:

A digital camera

Keys on a Medical Lake lanyard

A sweatshirt

2 windbreakers

Multiple notebooks, including a complete set of Aff/Neg LD notes from Prep.

A large pink, orange striped canvas bag (empty)

If any of these things are yours or your students please let me know so that I can work on getting them back to their proper owners.

Roberta

Attention all Parents and Students
Important Information and Titan Wish List!!

1)  If anyone is aware of a company that would be interested in supporting us by paying approximately $675.00 for the payment of the food at tournaments, please contact Smithy.  Otherwise, it is imperative that everyone pay his/her $25.00 to cover food.  If a sponser is found, we will credit your child's travel account by the $25.00
2)  If you are planning on upgrading your laptop computer, please consider donating your old one to the Titan Debate team.  It looks like the state will be changing the rules to allow laptops in some forms of debate competitions and we want to be prepared if and when the state does so.
3)  We are in need of volunteers to help with the dance fundraiser which is the week after next.  Please email me if you can help.
4)  I have very few orders for this year's Hoodies.  Please make sure that your order was sent to dsmithy@cvsd.org.  If it simply goes to dsmith I will never receive it.  If you did not receive a confirmation from me, I did not receive your order.  Please also note that you must indicate whether you want your name imprinted on the back of your hoodie.

November 12, 2008

You may now place orders for this year's hoodies.
We will accept orders for hoodies through the Thanksgiving holiday.  I will place the order on the Monday following Thanksgiving so that we may have them as soon as possible.

If you would like to view what the hoodie looks like, please click on the link under the category for this year's hoodie on the main titan Debate Website.

Charges for this year’s hoodies are as follows:

S-XL     $18.50
XXL    $21.00
XXL    $22.00

If you would like to add your name to the back of your hoodie, please add $5.00 to the above prices.

Note:  This year, to avoid the problem of people ordering hoodies and then not picking them up, your U-High account will be charged for your hoodie when you order it, and then credited when you pay for it.  If you do not pay for it, it will remain a charge on your U-High account the same as any other school fine.

Order your hoodies, simply by emailing me your order.  Do not just tell me in passing.  Email me so that I  have a record!!!

Thanks.

UPDATE ON FLATHEAD and note to all students.

Please see note from the head Flathead coach which is on the main webpage, under upcoming tournaments.

The following list of students were selected to compete at Flathead:
List of Competitors for Flathead. (The number after your name is the amount of events that you are currently signed up for.  However, remember there is a two IE limit and you cannot do both debate and IE's, so I will be talking with a couple of you about dropping events.

1.    Abbie Keenan (2)
2.    Brittany Holden (2)
3.    Caleb Palmquist (2)
4.    CJ Needham (2)
5.    Eliza Johnson (3)
6.    Erin Ormsby (2)
7.    John LeBlanc (3)
8.    Jordan Welter

IF any of the above students will be unable to attend the tournament, please email me ASAP, since this could prevent other deserving students from being cut from the event.

*****************************************************************************************************
NOTE WELL:  WE will not have practice on Veteran's Day, but we will have a special practice on Wednesday.  If you cannot make the Wednesday practice because of other Wednesday commitments, please try to stop by for about 5 minutes right after school on your way to "your other commitment."

Thanks.

Flathead/Kalispell - $125.00

Remember:  Parents who will judge, may earn $10.00 credit per round judged for U-High at tournaments throughout the year.  Since these away trips are at the beginning of the year, we will allow parents to volunteer for upcoming tournaments and then use "credit" to pay for initial trips.  If a parent goes on an away trip and serves as chaperone for the entire trip and agrees to judge all necessary rounds, that parent can earn that entire trip for his her student.  Normally, a parent can earn about $100.00 per full tournament of judging.

Please email smithy@cvsd.org if you wish to judge.  Simply follow the above link to the main Titan Debate (CVSD/University HS) website, look at the schedule and then email me as to the tournaments that you can judge.  If you can only judge for part of a tournament, please let me know what hours that you will be available so that we can arrange for others to cover you during your absence.  Furthermore, if you still need judges training, please advise me of this fact so that I may arrange the same.

Thank you.

Re:  Whitman Invitations

Dear Debaters,

It has been an arduous task selecting the students who will be invited to Whitman.  I am extremely proud of our entire team.  Several students who did not get selected to Whitman would certainly have made the “cut” in prior years.  Fortunately, this year’s team is just performing at a marvelous level.  I hope that you will all sign up for Snohomish which is the week after Whitman.  In fact, you may register now for Snohomish.  Furthermore, even if you did not get selected for Whitman, you may still be invited to Flathead (Kalispell).  So PLEASE don’t be disheartened if you are not one of the following students!

Invited Varsity

Caleb Palmquist
Tim Viall
Erin Ormsby
Robert Aneiro
Molly Wakeling
John LeBlanc
Maiya Jeffers

Novice

Top (Free) Male:  Pierce Oeflin
Top (Free) Female:  Brittany Holden

Invited Novices

Eliza Johnson
CJ Needham
Kyle Bailey
Julie Gray

Again Congratulations to all and keep up the good work!!!!

October 19, 2008

Due to hard economic times for many of our debate families, we are looking for a company/business/firm etc that might be interested in sponsoring us.  We are hoping for a donation of $675.00 to cover the student meals at local trips since the $25.00 individual family donation along with other debate fees is proving to be a burden for several of our families in this year's economy.  If you know of a company that might be able to sponsor us for this year, please let me know.

Thanks!

Smithy

Debaters - Please see the updated main debate page (follow link above).  Please note that the Fall Student Congress Legislation is now available on the document page of the main website.

Thanks.

Greetings Debate Parents, The Titan Debate Team is meeting and practicing regularly and we are headed to our second competition this weekend (October 17 and 18).

REMINDER.  All students who participate in Debate or any activity at University High School MUST have their Activity Eligibility paperwork filled out and turned in.  There are fees associated with this (your ASB card and activity fees).  In addition to this, each parent is asked to pay $25 to the Titan Debate booster club.  This money is used solely for food for your students at competitions that are close to home.  Our Booster club provides this service for your students who are at away from home (and food).  Last week the students who participated were given steak fajitas that were prepared on site by our club president!  Please get this money to us so we can get it to the boosters.

We also have many opportunities to participate in the Titan Debate experience.  We are seeking parents who are willing to judge at events.  Mr Smith is having a training at the Thursday, October 16 practice (2:30-5 PM) if you didn't make the training last week.  Parents who participate in judging can opt to have their judging hours/dollars count towards their students travel to away tournaments.

We may have opportunity to have a couple of smaller fund raisers that will be held home football and/or basketball games.  We will be selling raffle tickets for a beautiful quilt to be raffled.  If you attend games, please let us know if you are willing to sell raffle tickets at a game or two.

The Debate Deal of the Century

We have six remaining Debate Beatles Sweatshirts from last year... all in size medium.  I will sell these to the first six students to pay $11.00 to Mrs. Lewis in the business office (tell her that you are buying one of the six remaining Beatles shirts) bring me the receipt and you may select your shirt!

Minutes of Debate Meeting on Wednesday, May 21, 2008

1. New Debate Members introduced.
Congratulations to our new debaters:
Kyle Bailey, Chelsea Byer, Vince Cooper, Nick Houston, Eliza Johnson, CJ Needham, Lauren Nemitz, Cayla Olson, Conner Sabin, Jordan Welter and Mary Wakeling (returning from 2006-07 season)

2. Announced that the U-High Varsity members who are working with the junior high tournament may make a list of 8th graders who are competing in the Junior High School Tournament and have been identified by varsity members as possessing the skill necessary to succeed in high school debate and have also expressed an interest in joining the team.  Mr. Smith will make a point to watch identified students at the junior high tournament and decide whether to accept such students this year in lieu of the actual tryouts since not all junior high students were properly informed of this year¡¦s tryouts.

3. A list was sent around for students to write out their emails.
Mr. Smith wants all student and parent emails put into our schoolnotes debate website so that students and parents can keep up to date on what¡¦s going on.  Mr. Smith will put the emails in once he is advised of the same.  The schoolnotes website automatically notifies students and parents by email of changes to the website.

4.The 2008-09 Leadership Committee was announced.  Congratulations to
Captain Tim Viall, Captain Caleb Palmquist, Lieutenant Erin Ormsby (in charge of social functions including the Winter Dance fundraiser), Lieutenant Molly Wakeling (in charge of all secretary/treasurer duties including input of NFL points, and Lieutenant Robert Aneiro (in charge of the extemp box)!!!

Aluminum Cans ¡V Please bring them in to Mr. Smith, who will recycle them and put the money into the general school debate account to pay non student costs of upcoming trips.
