Sally's 5th-grade class had been studying astronomy. One morning at breakfast she announced, "On Friday we're having a quiz on the moon."
That's when her little brother piped up, "Are you going to let her go, Mom?"

Classroom Instruction that Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement
For a book from one of the major education associations -- the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) -- this is a relatively compact book of under 200 pages that offers nine categories of instructional strategies, along with the research and statistics to back up their efficacy. Among the nine are Summarizing and Note Taking; Homework and Practice; Nonlinguistic Representation; and Cooperative Learning. The emphasis in the book is on elementary instruction.

Bernie Poole: Kindness Counts
"Life is constantly thrusting at us random realities that we can either accept or deny. One day, about two months ago -- every day seems like an age here in India where my experiences are so frequently fresh and new, like those of a new born baby -- there was a knock at my guest house door."

Geography
Geography lessons can make a "world" of difference in students' knowledge of the world -- and in their test scores. That's because geography is multidisciplinary by nature. These lessons teach geography -- and math, language, and cultural literacy. Included: Dozens of ideas for teaching about the world of geography. Plus playground maps, activities for teaching geography's five themes, more.

Put a Stamp on Your Priorities
What are the important things you look for when grading student work? What are the things you and other teachers on your team have decided are most important? Once you decide, order a rubber stamp that lists them. For example, if you have decided that the most important things for students to pay attention to in their written work are spelling, punctuation, and neatness, have a stamp created that looks like this:

_______ Spelling
_______ Punctuation
_______ Neatness
Use the stamp to stamp each piece of student work. Then grade students on those important elements. You might use a letter grade, a check or check-plus, a plus sign or minus sign, or any other grading system to focus students on your team's main goals.
