September 22nd, 2010 --- Welcome Back to Schoolnotes for 2010-2011!
Work that has occurred in my classes thus far:
English 112
1. Students have selected a personal novel for Silent Reading, and are working through these almost daily.
2. Journal Entries are being done on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Topics range from Current events, to school policies, and creative writing.
3. Students are beginning to examine Critical Theory. Specifically, students are looking at literature through various critical lenses. Students are, in groups, creating brief presentations and notes for their classmates concerning a specific Critical Theory.
History 10
1. Students have completed an introductory unit examining Early Humans. An Evidence-based assignment asked students whether or not there was enough working evidence to prove evolutionary links between various groups of early hominids.
2. Students are currently examining Unit 2: Early Civilizations in Mesopotamia and Egypt.
History 11
1. Students have examined early Philosophers, such as John Locke and Thomas Hobbes, to develop an understanding of Rights, tyranny, absolutist governments, and the Social Contract.
2. Students are currently looking at the initial Stages of the French Revolution. The essential outcome asking, what are causes of Revolutions?

February 18th, 2010 --- We are roughly 2 weeks in to semester 2. Here is a brief update:
Period 1 Writing 110 --- Students are given a writing assignment on Monday, given time during the week to work on it, and asked to pass it in on Friday. Our first weekly assignment (last week) was a Persona piece -- students were asked to put themselves in the postion of another person, animal or thing and write. This week, the assignment is a Persuasive piece, where students are creating a persuasive argument. On Fridays students pass in 1.Rough Copy 2. Peer Editing Sheet 3. Formal Copy. Students will be given time in a Computer Lab on Fridays to complete good copies if needed.
Period 3 History 10 --- Students have completed their February Assignment -- An analysis of Evidence related to arguments surrounding evolution and Early Humans.
There will be a Quiz on class work to date NEXT Monday or Tuesday.
Period 4 History 112 --- Students are working through a unit examining the Enlightenment, Philosphes, Absolutism, Rights and Revolution, all connected to the French Revolution. Period 4 will have a test next Wednesday, February 24th. This class is piloting a potential new History Text for the Dept. of Education, and has spent time analyzing the textbook and reflecting on the content and presentation of the book.
Period 5 History 112 --- Similar to period 4, however, this class is currently completing it's February Assignment -- creating a Timeline of Significant Events for the French Revolution. This group should also expect a test next Wednesday, February 24th, 2010.

History 10 Period 1 --- Students are working on an assignment called: "Who is the Real Roman?" ---they are taking on roles of a particular person in Roman Society and are required to respond to questions from the class about their role. The best presentation/response will be the "Real Roman".
By FRIDAY: It is expected that ALL students will have passed in #1. Their Reflection questions related to work last week on the Greek Eras. #2 the Precis of the Alexander the Great Article.
English 10 Period 2 --- Students will be having a final Horror Short Story Test on FRIDAY.
History 11 Period 4 --- Students are beginning to examine World War 1. Continuing work with Historical Benchmarks: Cause & Consequence and Moral Judgment.
History 11 Period 5 --- Students are completing a project surrounding a photo from World War 1. Students must construct the history of the photo and find a song that relates well to the image. This will be presented on MONDAY, NOV. 9th

History 10 PLC -- Students will be beginning a two-week project examining different aspects of Ancient Greek History. The class will be divided in to three large grous -- Group 1 will examine The Trojan War Era. Group 2 will examine The Persian War Era. Group 3 will examine The Peloponnesian War Era. We will be focusing the class towards three key benchmarks: Significance, Evidence, and Historical Perspective-taking. Updated marks will be given out MONDAY.
English 11 -- Updated marks were given out TODAY. Homework for the weekend -- group activity to be handed in as an assignment MONDAY. We will be reading The Cask of Amontillado on MONDAY.

Period 2 English 11 --- Short Story Test on Tuesday. Here are the written response questions:
1.Choosing 1 of the 5 short stories we read, complete a timeline for the events of the story, and then, write a brief plot summary, focusing on the events. (The summary must be minimum 3 paragraphs, one page.)
2.Choosing any 2 of the Short Stories, write a Compare & Contrast style essay, where you discuss the short story elements, such as, plot, character, theme, conflict, etc. Make sure you do both comparison and contrast between the two selected stories. (must be minimum 3 paragraphs, one page.)

Period 1 History 10 PLC--- Assignment #2 is due Friday, Oct. 2nd. One copy per group. Remember you are arguing in favour of either Egypt or Mesopotamia as the greatest contributor to science. Friday we will be in the Library to work on Research Essays.
Period 2 English 11 --- We will be examining the short story, "The Lottery Ticket". Expect a quiz next Wednesday covering the first five short stories. We will then move on to Horror stories :)
Period 4 History 11 --- Finishing up our discussion of Rights (relating the content of the French Revolution), then moving on to Napoleon. Expect a quiz next week covering: Benchmarks: Significance and Continuity and Change and aspects of Absolutism, the Enlightenment and Revolution.

Here is what is going on/coming up!
Period 1 History 10 --- Assignment #1 (Early Humans) is due tomorrow. Sept 18th. We will be with Mr. Peters' class in C54. We will also begin examining what constitutes a "civilization". Again, the Historical Benchmark of "Evidence" will be used and discussed. Next week, we will primarily be working within our own room (C112), however, we will meet with Mr. Peters' class by the end of the week.
Period 2 English 11 --- We will continue working with the short story "The Moose and the Sparrow". As well, time will be given to work on your Autobiography.
Period 4 History 11 --- Assignment #1 is due at the end of class, Friday, Sept. 18th. You have all of class Friday to work on it. Sources include: 2 textbooks, emailed powerpoints, and ANY info. you have complied on you own. The key Historical benchmark to be discussed is "Significance".
Period 5 History 11 --- Assignment #1 (Significance of Absolutism/Enlightenment) is due. You will have 20-30 minutes to review with your group. We will begin examining the idea of what a "Revolution" is as well.
The first part of next week will be spent in C112 with Rutledge, however, we will meet with Peters' class by the end on the week!

History 11 --- World War One test Wednesday. This is an essay test, you have the three possible essay questions and associated thesis statements. You choose ONE to write about. You are allowed ONE piece of Loose-leaf, with any pertinent information you believe you could use for your essay. The loose-leaf MUST be your hand-writing, and you cannot "pre-write" an essay on the sheet.
**Note on Attendance --- if you are missing time now, you are missing a great deal of work, specifically considering there is only 18 days of classes left! It is YOUR responsibilty to catch up on work, hand-outs, etc. etc. **

English 9 --- 2 page Formal Plot Summary of Silent Reading Novel is due Monday, January 14th. We will continue working on these on Friday --- A rough copy should be done, as you will be working with the Peer Editing Sheet and a partner on Friday. When passed in Monday, the essay should include: Title Page, the written essay (2-3 pages typed), Bibliography, and the Peer Editor Checklist and Editor's Checklist.
History 10 --- Internet Research on the Middle Ages in the Library Today!
History 113 --- Finishing Open-Book test on the End of World War 2, the United Nations, and the Cold War.
1.We will be having a test on chapters 7-12 of The Outsiders. The test will be Multiple choice (based on review questions), a Timeline of events from chapters 7-12, true or false questions, and 2 short answer questions. (paragraphs)

History 10 --- Exam Review sheets were passed out today. I will review Thursday and Friday. As well, if you want to know your mark going in to the exam, they will be ready on Friday, NOT Thursday or Wednesday.
English 10 --- Essay topics for the exam have been given out. Prepare yourself by writing a practice essay ahead of time. This is what Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, will be for. Again, marks will be ready Friday, if you wish to know heading in to your exam.

History 10 --- Due to the vast amount of students who have been out this week due to field trips, Math competitions, etc, etc. The final Rome test is rescheduled for Monday, May 28th. If you miss that date, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to see me to complete the test at noon hour -- I am not chasing students around anymore!

History 10 --- We have been watching a series about Rome entitle Rome : Power and Glory. For each 50 minute part we have watched, there have been charts and fill-in-the-bank notes to complete. On WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 20th/06 we will have an open-book test covering the sheets you have completed for each film section (should be parts iii, iv, v, and vi.) Basically, if you have followed along, answered the worksheets, then there should be no problems.
History 121 --- Seminars will finish this Wednesday. GREAT JOB everyone! We had some very well done and insightful presentations!
English 10 --- You should be read up to p. 238 in To Kill a Mockingbird for Tuesday. As well, IF you have been doing your work, there should be no reason not to have questions/vocabulary done up to that point. WE NEED TO FINISH READING THE NOVEL BEFORE XMAS!!

English 10 --- "Mapping Maycomb" project for TKAM is due on MONDAY, Dec. 18th/2006. I would like everyone to continue reading the novel as much as possible on your own. We will aim to have the novel finished by next Tuesday/Wednesday.

History 10 --- Finishing up Ancient Rome Unit. This week we will look at a DVD series called Rome: Power and Glory that is very well done. There will be worksheets for each 52 min. episode that we examine. Look for a test on Rome early next week.
History 12 --- Should be the last week for student'led seminars. This will be a busy week to get these done!
English 10 --- WHOA! Time flies when you're having fun.... I guess! We need to get the novel, TO Kill a Mockingbird done before Xmas -- that means, only about 1.5 weeks to do it! Expect homework every night this week, to get the reading done!

History 10 -- NEXT TUESDAY "BBBBBIIIGGGGG" test on Ancient Greece Unit. Stick to the Review sheet we have been working on in class -- the test will be Outlined exactly in the same order. Expect many multiple choice and mix/match type questions.
History 12 -- First Draft of Research Essay due next FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17th/2006. Good Job with the test this past week --- your efforts will pay off for University next year!
English 10 -- Starting To Kill a Mockingbird on Tuesday. Expect a little more homework with this Novel unit, (ie. chapter summaries and questions)

History 10 --- Finish up work on Greek Gods/Goddesses this Wednesday. Expect to get an updated markbook mark on WEDNESDAY --- this will have to be signed by a parent!!!!
History 12 --- Finishing up "Empires" unit. Hopefully, an updated mark will come your way Thursday or Friday....
English 10 --- Vocabulary Quiz this Wednesday on "The Cask of Amontillado" Expect a markbook mark by the end of the week!

History 10 --- Review characters from Troy, plus outline key points concerning the Illiad (the story of the Trojan War)
History 12 --- Good work on the quizzies.... :) On Monday, we will look at details about writing History Essays. Maybe a trip to Chapters mid-week!
English 10 --- Vocabulary Quiz on Monday, concerning the 30 words from Poe's, "The Masque of the Red Death". Expect to start "The Cask of Amontillado" on Monday.

1. A "working" Bibliography for your Research paper. Not a final bibliogpaphy!

History 121 --- Complete your "Compare and Contrast" 500 word essay on 2 of 4 World Religions that we looked at this week. DUE MONDAY: include Formal Title page, typed if possible. And, if you use any other sources besides what I gave you, a bibliography please.
English 10 --- Complete your 5 paragraph essay or short story on "The Old Man". Remember you only have to choose 1 of 2!!!!

History 121 --- Complete the Old Testament Readings, and follow-up discussion questions. This is a university level reading, and is quite tough -- do your best! Hopefully I will find a good reading concerning original script from Islam to compare.
English 10 --- Finish Reading "The Old Man" and complete the questions concerning setting, theme, characters, and the twist at the ending. Get a family member to read it too.
