Our spelling program this year will focus on vowel patterns and how syllables are put together to make multi-syllabic words. We will study prefixes and suffixes as well.

"Three Cheers for Phonics"

This is a program in which we have a cheer to go along with each syllable pattern rule. The syllable patterns are:

closed syllable (cvc)

Closed syllables have ONE vowel (short sound) that is closed in at the end by a consonant.  (our cheer: You find short vowels in CLOSED syllables!)

Types of closed syllable words:

FLOSS WORDS: f, l, s, or z are DOUBLED in a closed syllable

CK words: You use the ck RIGHT after a short vowel

TCH words: You use the tch, RICHT after a short vowel

(our cheers are the same as the rules above)

open syllables(CV)

Open syllables have ONE vowel at the end that is NOT closed in by a consonant. (ex: no, me)

(our cheer: When you open up the door, the vowel is free. He calls his name as LOUD AS CAN BE!)

silent e syl;lable (CV)

Silent e syllables are closed syllables with an 'e' at the end. The 'e' is silent, but the vowel in the middle changes from a short vowel sound to a long vowel sound. (same)

(Our cheer: Silent E you're to blame you make that vowel say its name!)

Two-vowel talkers  (ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, oe, ue)

Two vowels side by side - the first one makes the LONG vowel sound (bait, beam, say, boat, toe)

(our cheer: Two vowels side by side the firs one says its name with PRIDE!)

Two-vowel whiners  (oi,oy,au,aw,ou,ow, eu, ew, ui, oo)

Two vowels side by side - they do not make the LONG vowel sound (sound, now, sauce, boy, boil)

(Our cheer: Two vowels doing fine, they have a fight and start to whine!)

Bossy-r (er, ir, ur, or, ar)

A vowel followed by an 'r' which changes the vowel sound

(Our cheer: er, ir, ur, say IR, IR, IR!  or says 'or' What are you waiting for? AR says 'ar' Like a shining star!)

STUDENTS WILL BE GETTING A BOOKLET WITH THE VOWEL PATTERNS AND SPELLING RULES TO USE AT HOME.
