Welcome to the Kindergarten Class Homepage!  During the school year I will attempt to keep all of you updated on upcoming events and what's happening in our classroom.  Come back to our class site often to check for updates on all our class activities!

KINDER NEWS

September just flew by!  The children in Kindergarten are very busy adjusting to new routines, making new friends, going to their "specials,' and working on their academics.  The children are doing very well and adjusting nicely.

In Religion, we have been learning about "welcomes," and our first bible story:  "Jesus and the Children."  We read the story, drew pictures, sang songs, and acted out the scene.  We have some budding actors and actresses in this class!

In Reading and Phonics, we have been working on the theme:  "Look at Us!"  We have read stories on coming to Kindergarten and the alphabet, as well as some about feelings.  Our favorite is Chicka, Chicka, Boom Boom and Chrysanthemum.  The skills we have been working on are rhyming and recognizing partner letters - matching upper and lowercase letters.  We are working very hard on these and will visit the Phonics Center this week to reinforce these skills.

In Math, we are focusing on "sorting."  We have sorted objects by color, size, shape, and by two attributes:  color & shape, size & shape, etc.  We took our first test and overall they did well!  Next, we were onto Geometry.  We learned about plane shapes (circle, triangle, square, & rectangle) as well as solid shapes (sphere, cone, cylinder, rectangular prism & cube).  Now we will use these shapes as well as our sorting skills of color, shape, and size to begin patterning!

In Science and Social Studies we have been learning about apples, seeds, saplings, trees, a tree life cycle and Johnny Appleseed.  We tasted and graphed apples (Red won!)  Unfortunately, not all science labs can be this yummy!  We also completed our review of colors.  We even got to guess and mix colors together.  Our next unit was on Christopher Columbus.  We learned what an explorer is, how he navigated by the stars, discovered a new world, the names of his three ships and learned a little about maps.

Our floor participated in our first together project which was Pinwheels for Peace.  Each class from Pre-K 3 to 3rd Grade made a poster and each child decorated their pinwheel.  We put our wish for peace on our Pinwheel, and with a short ceremony brought them outside to the Fatima statue to display our pinwheels.  We watched them whirl round, sending our wishes for peace to God!

What's next?!

Our first walking trip, St. Francis Hunt, fire prevention, Guardian Angels, St. Theresa, Letter of the Week, Harvest Day, cooking, Bartholomew's first travels for this year, and of course Halloween!!

All in all, we have had a very busy and exciting first month!  Keep checking back for more updates!
