General Questions and Answers:

Question: What should we be studying at home to help our child prepare for the tests and quizzes?

The students are learning more than what is tested.  Your child is in a TAG class which means that they learn the curriculum in an accelerated manner, and that the curriculum is also enriched.  The tests that your children are taking are 4th grade level and created by the curriculum committees for Newport News Public Schools.  The tests are not written to test everything that is taught in the unit.  If they were, they would be very very long tests.  I will do my best to provide study guides from the curriculum that coincide with the tests to help parents study with their children.  Students are still responsible for learning all of the information taught in the classroom, as there are no study guides for the SOL tests and we will never know what questions will be asked.  That being said, please study the study guides and also the notes in their interactive notebooks.  The Social Studies, Math and Vocabulary textbooks are also helpful study tools and I will continue to update the website with helpful web links and resources to make learning more fun and interactive.

Your child should have notes from every class in their notebooks.  If they do not, or you are concerned that your child is missing information, please email me and I will set them up with a student who has all the notes, so they can copy the notes down neatly and in the correct notebook.

Question: Is homework graded?

Answer: No, homework is not a grade, because it is done at home, sometimes with the assistance of others in the home.  Homework is checked daily and questions that the students have are addressed. Sometimes the students exchange papers and correct the homework with me, other times, the answers are on the board in the morning and the students correct them by themselves and turn them in so I can see where common errors were made.

Question: Will all papers in the Friday folder be graded?

Answer: Not always.  Not everything counts as a grade.  Some assignments are done together as a class, collected and then put in the folder.  If you are concerned that an assignment has not been seen by me, please just send it back in the folder on Monday and I will look at it.
